01、Why did I choose the United States?

I actually wanted to go to Canada, but then because my GPA was not very high, there were not many options for Canadian schools;

In fact, what I want to apply for the most is clinical mental health counseling, the United States has a lot of choices, will pay more attention to the background outside the grades, and the United States two-year system, with internships, in fact, for this profession, clinical experience is very important, therefore, when choosing to apply also joined the United States.

In the end, the school applied to in the UK was also very good, but in fact, after I graduated, I wanted to be a consultant, I would be very confused at the time, UCL has a good reputation and is also a famous school, so I asked myself a question, if I go to UCL, can I ensure that I can have the ability to do counseling independently and take on cases after graduation?

The answer is of course no, because UCL's major is a one-year shooting bias theory, biased towards Education, and no internship, according to the curriculum, experience accumulation and other factors, my goal is to be able to do counseling after graduate school, so I chose a school in the United States, two years, and can have 1000 hours of clinical work experience after graduation.

Here is actually recommended that if you do not have gap year experience, you can go to the internship to see more, understand clearly what kind of ability you want to do this job requires you;

And think clearly, what are your goals after you finish graduate school, and whether there is a big difference between you and now after you finish graduate school. Or what exactly is the use of reading this Master? It is possible to confirm the choice of school from these aspects.

02. APSY applied psychology professional internship suggestions;

I think the first thing is to think clearly about what you like and what you want to do, the purpose of the internship should be to verify your ideas and abilities, to try what the work in this field is like, what kind of ability you should have, and what you expect from the job.

For example, I just like the direction of psychological counseling, then the internship can go to the hospital, psychological counseling agency, school psychological counseling center, etc.

Like our major, I feel that undergraduate students are actually a bit difficult to intern, because when we were undergraduates, we did not really have the ability to do counseling, and may only be able to contact some about measurement, and the hospital can see how the doctor writes medical records and diagnoses, and contact the real client what it is like, the doctor's treatment plan for the patient;

So in fact, I kind of recommend everyone GAP year if allowed, because I learned a lot in GAP year, especially APSY students will actually be exposed to psychology at the undergraduate level;

But it's hard to really understand what counseling really is like, how to do it when you actually face your client, and how to apply what you've learned in school.

03. Preparation for the language test

There are many UIC holidays, you can arrange each holiday, in addition to the time that requires IELTS or GRE, you can go to learn about internships and summer schools.

For language tests, use UIC's ELC to do speeding training and writing exercises. I am a very poor writer, but after learning the GRE, I immediately took the exam much better hahahahahahahahaha

In addition, I actually started to learn IELTS from the summer vacation of the second semester of my sophomore year, but in fact, every time I delayed, it was not until the first semester of my senior year that I really scored, so I suggest that you prepare early;

Recommend the UIC test room, because I also went to HK to test IELTS, but in fact, every time I go to a trip and then it is very hard, the test room in the UIC is very close to the dormitory building, everyone is familiar with the environment, the test is much more comfortable, and there is no need for many twists and turns on the road.

04. Research direction of APSY Applied Psychology Major

There are many branches of psychology research, first of all, the premise of everyone's choice is to try to understand each branch, in addition to taking classes at UIC, you can also ask teachers more questions about this field, because there are many good teachers in the department who have their own areas of expertise, and everyone can go to reach out to them.

"Oriental Night Talk.72" UIC APSY Student's Meiyan Road (Part 1)

We can also experience the content and status of work in this field through internships; or go to the official websites of some schools to see what the graduate courses in this field are learning, and we can ask the senior students who graduated from the department to see if they have studied in your area of interest and learn more about them.

"Oriental Night Talk.72" UIC APSY Student's Meiyan Road (Part 1)

Be sure to contact early on letters of recommendation!!! I know that people will have all kinds of concerns so they delay !!! But in fact, some teachers will also be very procrastinating, so everyone must prepare early!!!!!!!

If you choose an intermediary to contact more and update your situation, they will also know more about what you want, what to worry about, and what you need help;

Because I think the agent is the person who helps themselves to get to that school, if they don't know what kind of person you are, don't know where you are, then how to help your cv and ps? So let's do more reach out!!!

05. My ShenYan Mental Journey;

Knowing overseas oriental study is introduced by my sister, in fact, really before the first meeting, I not only asked my own professional sister but also asked other professional sisters, they all gave a good evaluation and sense of experience, so finally decided to meet first to talk about it.

"Oriental Night Talk.72" UIC APSY Student's Meiyan Road (Part 1)

In fact, sometimes I am not confident in myself, because I feel that I am not good enough, and sometimes when I choose a school, I am very hesitant to ask Daniel, this school may not work, but Daniel will tell me: I think it is OK.

Ps also changed many times according to my school revision, and the clerical teacher was also very attentive to call and communicate with me, and straightened out the part of my own vague desire to express little by little. Then we will also meet often at UIC! This one is really too important.

And I think the most important thing is reliable, in fact, I am a little anxious after the application, because after getting a few rejection letters, I decided to apply for some schools, and the team at this time was also very fortunate to help me screen out my biased major.

"Oriental Night Talk.72" UIC APSY Student's Meiyan Road (Part 1)

At that time, I was in a hurry, although I thought I only wanted to read Counseling, but because I was already very unconfident at that time, I sometimes felt that it was okay to be biased towards Education, so I might say to everyone, "This seems to be OK."

After one night, I was very bitter and tangled that since studying abroad was not a trivial matter, it would cost manpower and material resources, and I had a clear direction, so I had some remorse, thinking that maybe this major was not good, and I would be very guilty to tell Daniel that I might think that this School in Kashin was not good.

But people never advise me to say "this is ok", I have never heard such words, Daniel has always said "if you think this is not working, then help you find it", when I myself will waver and not confident, everyone understands me and helps me believe me, so this support is the most valuable part of my application.
