Since the beginning of 2020, Hong Kong has experienced five waves of epidemics, this time is particularly serious, with the joint efforts of the central government and people from all walks of life in Hong Kong, the epidemic in Hong Kong has been initially contained.

At 0-24:00 on April 23, 2022, there were 429 new confirmed cases (including 19 cases imported from abroad) and 13 new deaths in Hong Kong. After reporting 342 new cases on February 6 this year, after 77 days, hong Kong has returned to less than 500 new confirmed cases in a single day. At the same time, from April 21, Hong Kong began to relax restrictions such as social distancing in stages.
At the end of this wave of epidemics, as citizens' lives gradually return to normal, I would like to talk about my personal thoughts on the epidemic in Hong Kong.
First, on the importance of vaccination
The fifth wave of the epidemic in Hong Kong has infected 1189229 people, with a cumulative death rate of 9,036 people and a case fatality rate of 0.76% (it should be noted here that the "confirmed" standard implemented in Hong Kong is that as long as the new crown nucleic acid or antigen is positive, it is considered to be confirmed, which is equivalent to "all nucleic acid positive infected people" in domestic data, that is, including asymptomatic infected people). Among the infected, the case fatality rates of unvaccinated and vaccinated with one, two and three doses of vaccines were 3.03%, 1.02%, 0.16% and 0.04%, respectively. It can be seen that the case fatality rate of unvaccinated is nearly 80 times that of the three-dose vaccine.
From another point of view, Hong Kong's current round of 9,036 deaths, which is a terrifying number! More than 300,000 people have been infected in this round in Shanghai, and the death toll is only double digits. Why is the gap so large? Let's take a look at the proportion of vaccinations in the two places, as of mid-February, Shanghai has 95% of vaccinations, while Hong Kong has only 65%.
From this point of view, vaccination is directly related to effective prevention, reduction of symptoms and reduction of case fatality rates. Get vaccinated! Get vaccinated! Needless to say.
Second, the proportion of infection in the elderly is high, and pay attention to the elderly under the epidemic
In this round of the epidemic in Hong Kong, it is obvious that the proportion of infection in the elderly is high and the case fatality rate is higher. Speaking of data, among the infected people so far, there are more than 520,000 people over the age of 50, accounting for 43%; the number of deaths over the age of 50 is as high as nearly 9,000, accounting for 98%. The reasons are obvious:
- Hong Kong's aging population is more serious and accounts for a high proportion, with 56% of deaths being elderly people in nursing homes.
- The proportion of elderly people dying from COVID-19 has underlying diseases at 92%.
- Vaccination rates in older adults are too low, with 73% of deaths completely unvaccinated.
The illness of the elderly should be paid sufficient attention to, and there should be special care for the elderly population, and many epidemic areas in the interior should pay special attention to this point.
Third, rational prevention and control, fully considering people's livelihood and economic recovery
Hong Kong, which has just dropped to less than 500 new cases in a single day, announced a phased relaxation of social distancing and other restrictions, including the resumption of restaurant evening dining (which can be until 22:00), the allowing banquets for no more than 20 people, the reopening of stadiums and public entertainment venues, the opening of theme parks (Disney, Ocean Park has been opened), and the resumption of local tours by travel agencies. It can be seen that the above series of measures are conducive to people's livelihood and economic recovery.
In contrast, the epidemic prevention measures in some cities in our mainland are too "tense" and "conservative". Hong Kong's rapid relaxation of certain restrictions is prerequisite, such as the strict implementation of the "Vaccine Pass", which requires two doses of vaccination to enter designated establishments from 30 April, and the need for food and beverage workers and diners to comply with hygiene precautions and wear masks in non-dietary situations.
The above three points are some personal reflections, in any case, I hope that everyone will take a good look at the epidemic data in Hong Kong, so that our future epidemic prevention measures and psychological construction can play a certain reference role.
