The upgraded version of subaru's horizontally opposed engine station wagon is more than just a look bag.
Subaru Outback stops next to a million-dollar beachfront villa in Connecticut, just like it does through a campground on Mount Hood. Most car owners, no matter where they live or how much money they make, prefer outback's practicality, comfort, and affordable price to rock's, groundbreaking hell days. The inland wilderness is the opposite. This is Subaru's version of Raptor – boosting and factory equipping to address more abuse on rough terrain. We drove one near those beautiful houses in Connecticut, and while wilderness looks like an exterior pack, it's completely purposeful.
Larger clearance than most trucks and SUVs
Sitting 8.7 inches off the ground in the regular inland, that's more than many SUVs and full-size pickups. Wilderness raised its clad body to 9.5 inches, one-tenth higher than the Tacoma TRD Pro. It won't bite off the biggest boulder, but it's about the same as Toyota's. On the street, it looks despicable.
All-terrain tires
Subaru is equipped with the Yokohama Geolander for several models, but this is a true all-terrain set. The tread glue of these tires bites more strongly on dirt, dirt and loose gravel. They swap some road grip and are usually louder, although this particular Yokohama is one of the more street-friendly A/T tires. We like the contrast between the white letter sidewalls and the 17-inch glossy black wheels.

Since 1995, as a symbol of the Outback, plastic body cladding has been a key armor for off-road vehicles, preventing brushes and branches from scratching unapproded paint. On wilderness, cladding extends to the headlights and forms a distinctive mesh grille. Below are two Gatling gun-patterned LED fog lights, an orange cap for integrated tow hooks, and a metal skateboard to protect the underside of the body.
There is a racing stripe
Technically, this matte appliqué is designed to reduce solar glare on the hood. Of course. Just like Durango's Hellcat, we wanted to see this graphic across the roof.
Heavy-duty roof rails
Here's something functional: a sturdy metal rack with a rated weight of 700 pounds. The four yellow lids in each corner indicate fastening hooks for various accessories, such as a rooftop camping tent large enough to accommodate several adults (which is why Subaru only guarantees weight when parking). Plus, when moving, the wilderness can move up to 220 pounds on its sturdy railing. Note to kayakers: To achieve maximum weight, Wilderness eliminated the integrated crossbar that rotates from the dominant rail.
More cladding, hooks, and badges
As with the front, the rear bumper cladding extends to the taillights and similarly reshapes the departure angle of nearly two degrees. The reflector moves from the lower bumper to the top below the brake lights. There are also two tow hooks, orange overlay, another skid plate under the rear differential, wheel arches with lots of extra cladding, and the right rear side almost covered with the fuel tank cover. Subaru's equivalent of the Jeep's Trail Rated badge sits proudly on the tailgate and on each front fender.
Sturdy floor mats
Having a custom set of rubber pads on all four seats means there's no need to go to the aftermarket. There is no doubt that Subaru designers were inspired by their children's Scouting organization when creating the badge and the patterns that surrounded it.
Easier than it seems
Despite the ruggedness of the outside, the interior is luxurious. The leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear lever are decorated in orange, with orange stitching covering the dashboard, door armrests and seats. These seats and most other touchpoints are covered with StarTex, Subaru's synthetic leather name. It's waterproof, easy to clean, and has a unique honeycomb texture that feels upscale. Bonus: The rear seat backs have a similar texture and fabric, so they don't stain the usual carpet when folded.
Drive like a normal inland with less grip and more go
Although the tire grip is significantly worse at the limit, the steering sluggishness and suspension suspension of the Auhoo (picture | configuration | inquiry) are still present. Comfort is king of this car. We haven't measured the acceleration on the track yet, but it feels a little faster. Subaru shortened the final gear ratio from 4.11:1 to 4.44:1 and recalibrated the CVT. This helps with driving on the track, as wilderness doesn't have a low-gear transfer case. The turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine is the engine we recommend to all inland buyers to order because of its 277 lb-ft torque at 2000 rpm. This is the standard of the wilderness.
