On April 22, Academician Zhong Nanshan delivered a speech at the establishment and unveiling ceremony of the Cancer Medical Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University (hereinafter referred to as "the First Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University").
At the ceremony, Zhong Nanshan said that tumors are the main factors threatening the health and life safety of people on the mainland, and to better prevent and treat tumor diseases require early detection and early treatment, leaving more adequate space for follow-up treatment.
For every four people on the mainland, one dies from a tumor
"We have never forgotten that when we become doctors and engage in medical work, we must target the difficulties and diseases encountered by most ordinary people." Zhong Nanshan said that tumors are one of the main causes of death in Ordinary Chinese. The "China Health Statistics Yearbook 2020" released by the Health Commission shows that among the five most common diseases that harm the people and cause death, tumors are the first.
It is understood that among the urban population, tumors account for about 25.4% of deaths, and in the rural population, it is 24.5%. "One in four deaths in China is due to a tumor." Zhong Nanshan believes that it is urgent to improve the prevention and treatment capacity of tumors.
Early detection is key to treating tumors
"Tumors are frightening not only because there aren't many treatments, but more because they're discovered too late." Zhong Nanshan believes that early tumor detection is the key to replacing treatment with health as the center.
"I came to Guangzhou more than 50 years ago, and the tumor patients I saw at that time were very advanced, why? Treatment is only made because the patient has obvious symptoms. Zhong Nanshan said that the census of patients has greatly improved the probability of finding tumors in advance. If a patient is able to detect a tumor early before symptoms develop, the therapeutic effect and development of the disease is very different from retreating after the symptoms have developed.
"Early detection and early treatment are the sweetness of us." According to reports, the First Hospital of Guangdong Medical University conducted a high-resolution CT examination census in Liwan District, Guangzhou in 2017, and found 189 lung cancer patients in advance among more than 11,000 citizens, most of whom were in stage 0 to 1, and the five-year survival rate after treatment is expected to reach more than 85%. If not detected in advance, the five-year survival rate of lung cancer patients is only between 10% and 30%.
"Early detection leaves very good room for follow-up treatment, and we are more optimistic about the effect after its treatment." Zhong Nanshan said.
The discovery and treatment of tumors requires an integrated approach
"A quarter of all deaths in hospitals are due to tumors, a situation that can be reversed with prevention and early detection." Zhong Nanshan said that cancer hospitals have the advantages and advantages of cancer treatment, but more hospitals should be based on early discovery and early identification, which is also the direction of the oncology medical center of the first hospital of Guangdong Medical College.
Zhong Nanshan introduced that the early detection of tumors is difficult and often requires multidisciplinary consultation. In the case of lymphoma, for example, patients have different symptoms, and it is only through the joint efforts of multiple disciplines that it is possible to confirm that the patient is lymphoma.
"We are very confident that we can do a good job in the early detection and treatment of tumors, even if it is more advanced and intermediate, there are treatment methods." Zhong Nanshan said that in the past, the treatment of tumors was mainly chemotherapy, but now there are more treatment methods, such as targeted therapy, biological therapy, immunotherapy and so on. After the establishment of the cancer medical center, it can better coordinate the medical forces of various departments and use comprehensive methods to find and treat tumors.
