The development of artificial grass planting in key ecological protection areas such as the Yellow River Basin and grasslands can reduce soil erosion, curb the trend of grassland degradation, desertification and salinization, and enable grasslands to recuperate. At present, the main pressure on food security on the mainland is feed grain, and an important channel to promote the reduction of feed grain is to increase the supply of forage and reduce the amount of refined feed consumed by cattle and sheep breeding. In 2021, the national grain feeding reform will complete an area of more than 20 million mu, collect and store 55 million tons of high-quality forage, and reduce the use of corn and soybean meal for cattle and sheep breeding by 7.2 million tons, which is equivalent to reducing the demand for corn and soybean planting of 26 million mu, saving 6 million mu of arable land, and achieving the effect of turning grass into grain.

There are more than 56,000 copies of more than 2,600 species of grass germplasm resources in mainland China, but the development and utilization are seriously insufficient. More than 70% of the excellent forage grass species rely on imports, and the import of grass seeds has increased by more than 3 times in the past 10 years. Imports of alfalfa hay have increased more than 6 times in the past 10 years. The output value of the mainland forage industry is less than 10% of that of the United States, the output value of grass seeds is less than 5% of that of the United States, the amount of lawn mowers and lawn mowers is only 1% of that of the United States, and the ownership of balers is only 0.1% of that of the United States. The deep processing of the grassland industry is insufficient, and the added value of the industry is low. The output value of the forage deep processing industry in the United States has reached nearly 3 billion US dollars, and the mainland is almost blank. In the future, it is necessary to further strengthen the innovation of forage germplasm, cultivate new varieties of ultra-high yield, stress-resistant salinity and alkali tolerant forage, develop new technologies such as unmanned pasture, digital grassland, intelligent grazing, and precise restoration of grassland, change grassland and grassland production methods, and greatly improve the production level of forage and grassland production. It is suggested that the state should increase the share and proportion of R&D investment in grassland and grassland science and technology, continue to increase support, and strengthen the multi-functional and industrial chain innovation of grassland and grassland.
