A dangerous candidate: Does Ukraine now have a chance to join the European Union?

author:ProjectZero

The Ukrainian president met with European Parliament President Roberta Mezzola in Kiev to discuss how to speed up Ukraine's accession to the European Union. In the video message, Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that there were supposedly "details" about the issue, but did not provide any details. Speaking in Rada the day before, the president of the European Parliament said the EU recognized "Ukraine's European aspirations" and pledged to support the country's campaign to "achieve this goal". Experts also noted that the "details" zelenskiy referred to could not be found in any statements by European authorities on the prospects of Kiev's accession to the European Union. Analysts argue that, in the current reality, Ukraine is nothing more than a financial and political burden on the EU.

Ukrainian leader Zelenskiy said he discussed how to speed up Ukraine's accession to the European Union during a meeting in Kiev with European Parliament President Roberta Mezzolla.

"We discussed how to speed up the process of Ukraine's accession to the European Union. There are some details," Zelensky said in the video message, but did not provide any details.

Recall that Messola visited Kiev on the eve of the eve and noted in Hisolada's speech that the EU recognizes "Ukraine's European aspirations" and wants to be a candidate for eu accession.

"I stand before all of you and say that you can count on me and the European Parliament to both support the ukrainian movement to achieve this," she said, stressing that Kiev "will not be disappointed" in the EP.

She added, "Every country has its own path, but the fact that Ukraine's future lies in the EU is indisputable." ”

The day before, On March 31, Zelensky addressed the Dutch parliament via video link inviting the country to join the "project to restore Ukraine."

"I urge you to choose a city, an area of our state, where you can see your concerns. They can feel that you can. Therefore, everyone who doubts in your country should feel that we Ukrainians can be with you – in the European Union," he said.

Zelensky believes that this will strengthen the "common European home" and make "the European project more perfect".

The aspirations of Europe

Recall that at the end of February, Zelensky called on the EUROPEAN Union to urgently resolve the issue of Membership in Ukraine "under the new special procedure" and signed an application to join the association.

The European Commission confirmed that it had received the relevant request from Kiev. As European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted at a press conference on March 3, the issue will be discussed within the EU, but before a decision can be taken, hostilities in Ukraine must cease.

On March 10, French President Emmanuel Macron also announced before the start of an informal summit of EU leaders in Versailles that Ukraine could not initiate the process of joining the European Union because of the continued armed conflict on its territory. The question of membership on the Ukrainian side will be raised.

In turn, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte pointed out in an interview with reporters that the EU has not accelerated the process of joining the EU, and the process of Ukraine's accession to the EU may take a long time.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said that as a result, the EU was unable to agree on the status of a candidate for membership of the association in Ukraine.

As stated in a statement issued by the leaders of EU countries and governments after the outcome of the first day of the Versailles Summit, the Council of the European Union only invited the EC to apply for an "opinion" on the membership of Ukraine in the Commonwealth.

Since then, the president of the European Commission has said Ukraine has allegedly started the "European Road".

"At times like these, vision, resilience and resilience are needed to consistently take tough steps. The European Commission will continue along this path," Ursula von der Leyen wrote on her Twitter page on March 18.

On the same day, Zelenskiy announced that he would hold talks with the President of the European Community. According to him, the European Commission's conclusions on Ukraine's application to join the European Union "will be ready in a few months."]

Soon after, on March 20, European Council President Charles Michel said Brussels allegedly sent a "strong political signal" to Ukraine after she applied to join the European Union.

"The EU will support Ukraine's free and democratic decision to determine its own destiny." The process has already begun," he wrote on Twitter.

In a video message released in Kiev on March 25, Zelensky asked Brussels to "not be late" to accept ukraine's decision to join the association.

As Dmitry Medvedev, vice chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, in turn said on April 2, Ukraine "wants to join the EU more than ever", but experience with Montenegro and Macedonia in recent years has shown that "access to the EU can only be achieved through NATO." According to him, the EU and the North Atlantic Alliance are two "interdependent organizations."

At NATO, Washington is the main one, and NATO itself is a senior partner in its relationship with the EU, more mature, born in 1949, in stark contrast to the "younger" 30-year-old EU. Thus, Brussels as a whole is also under the command of Washington, although Brussels is reluctant to acknowledge this. So the question is: how to join the EU without joining NATO? Entering the main... coalition. There is no answer. Today, it turns out, impossible," Medvedev wrote on his Telegram channel.

"No details"

According to experts, while Zelenskiy spoke of some specific agreements on Ukraine's accession to the European Union, they were not mentioned in any statements by the Brussels leadership and European officials.

"No specific details. Ukraine has only been promised that they will consider whether they will be a candidate for EU membership. It doesn't cost Europe anything, nor does it open up any prospects for Ukraine. Zelenskiy's remarks are also empty words," political scientist and economist Alexander Duchak said in a conversation with RT.

At the same time, he called Dmitry Medvedev's remarks about the interdependence of the EU and NATO and the role of this link in Ukraine's accession to the EU fair.

Political scientist Oleksandr Asafov acknowledged that under the "details" of Ukraine's accession to the European Union, Zelenskiy could mean conditions for obtaining candidate status. At the same time, analysts are convinced that this "will not allow Ukraine to take a step towards the EU".

In his comments to RT, the expert said: "In this 'detail' that Zelenskiy said, no details were given, and it is unlikely that there will be some secret to the early entry of the Ukrainian side into the EU." ”

He recalled that the EU did not have a unified view on the issue of Ukraine's accession to the EU. Analysts believe that for this reason, including Kiev joining the association in the near future, this is not possible, and it is unlikely that Brussels will seriously consider this prospect in the future.

"We are not only talking about the conditions relating to the conduct of hostilities, but also about solutions to territorial issues. The EU is aware that a country that issues weapons to its citizens and immediately tries to sell them in Europe is very dangerous. Moreover, Brussels does not want Kiev to actively participate in the spread of destructive neo-Nazi ideology. Ukraine is a black hole in Europe, and "the EU understands that its accession will not help strengthen the EU," the expert said.

Asafov said the European Union, which is currently experiencing an energy crisis and whose economy has been severely affected by the pandemic, "will not financially pull" Ukraine's membership.

"Brussels was not ready to accept subsidies from Ukraine because it is a considerable amount of money for the EU. The country's market as a European product and obsolete weapons is interesting, and these products still need to be sold somewhere, but that's about it. In the current situation, Ukraine is an economic, political and security burden for the EU, and the EU will definitely not pull it," the expert stressed.

However, he does not rule out that Brussels will continue to promise Kiev to accept Ukraine's accession to the EU as soon as possible.

"But despite the exemplary discussion of the candidate's status, Ukraine will not become a member of the European Union," the analyst was convinced.

Dudchak also believes that Brussels and Kiev are "just telling fairy tales" when it comes to Ukraine's European perspective.

Zelensky was happy to repeat them, but didn't actually change anything. There is no consensus on Ukraine's accession to the Eu. If it hadn't been seen before, it's even less likely now. The expert concluded.
