Kaarina Kaikkonen

Kaarina Kaikkonen is one of the most internationally recognized artists.
She is known for shaping the urban landscape and emphasizing the community through her installations. In her work one can find references to the current theme of the place of the time and the basic needs of how the environment or culture exists. Old clothes contain the presence of former users, placing the viewer in front of the present and the unknown, but at the same time you will feel familiar and intimate. Impressive installations made from jackets and shirts are well known in Finland and the United States, Cuba, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and more. Her first installation was exhibited in Helsinki in 1988. One of finland's most famous works is her "road" installation built on the steps of Helsinki Cathedral in 2000. Her work can be found in several collections such as the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, the Helsinki City Art Museum and the EMMA Espoo Museum of Modern Art. A student at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Kekkonen received the National Visual Arts Award in 1989, the Finnish Art Prize in 2001 and the Finnish Lion Medal of the Order of the Lion, First Class, in 2013. Kaiconin has also received international awards such as the Public Prize at the 2004 Sculpture Exhibition in The Hague, the Netherlands, and the Honorary Award at the 11th Biennale in Cairo, Egypt, 2009.
