From the age of 26 to 57, in 31 years, Li Suting (pictured) only did one thing, devoted herself to field archaeological work, experienced wind, frost, rain and snow, cold, heat and cold, let the Qin bricks and Han tiles reappear in the world, and excavate new and old stone tools underground.

By chance, she was admitted to the Department of Archaeology of Zhengzhou University. Bathed in the lectures and style of archaeologists, she was deeply taught and influenced by her mentor, who made her go from school to archaeology, from indoors to fields.

The serious attitude and the ability to withstand loneliness are her experience in field archaeology, and it is also her perseverance.

On the xiaoshuangqiao archaeological site near the north fourth ring road of the west fourth ring road of Zhengzhou, yellow rape flowers are scattered in the fields, peach trees, apricot trees, one here, one there.

As the leader of the archaeological excavation project at the Xiaoshuangqiao site, Li Suting and the team members came to the archaeological site and walked into one exploration party after another to discuss the specific work and the next archaeological excavation plan.

The ruins of Xiaoshuangqiao were the capital of the state in the middle of the Shang Dynasty. Li Suting said that this site is large in scale, rich in cultural connotation and important, and meets the conditions for being the capital of the Shang Dynasty. The site is located in the ancient documents recorded in the Kudi, the cultural appearance is relatively simple, the accumulation of ruins is relatively short, the age is connected to the Zhengzhou Shangcheng and prosperity, and there are more Dongyi cultural factors in the site, which coincides with the historical records of Zhongding Falcon Capital. The excavation project of the Xiaoshuangqiao site also became one of the top ten archaeological discoveries in The country in 1995.

"In 1995, when I was 30 years old, I walked out of the heritage warehouse, walked to the field archaeology, said goodbye to the preservation and identification of cultural relics, and became a field archaeology team member." Li Suting said that in that year, the first large-scale excavation of the Xiaoshuangqiao site also began. In fact, as early as school, she had come to Xiaoshuangqiao for internship and realized the importance of the Xiaoshuangqiao ruins.

In 2014, archaeological excavations were launched again at the site of Xiaoshuangqiao. Li Suting once again walked into the place where her archeological career began. This time, her identity has changed from excavation team member to excavation leader.

The college entrance examination volunteer originally wanted to report to the spirit of the legal teacher to guide her to the field

For a long time, Li Suting was the only woman engaged in field excavations at the Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology.

Field archaeology itself is more arduous, and at that time, girls engaged in field excavation, which was even more rare and difficult. So, what exactly was it that made Li Suting devote herself to archaeology, an industry that was not popular at that time?

"In fact, I volunteered for the college entrance examination, and I wanted to apply for the law major at that time." Li Suting said that listening to the 1982 archaeology students of Zhengzhou University said that the archaeology major is very good, can often visit the historical sites, and can also go to the field site for internship, law, Chinese and other majors, are very envious of the archaeology students. So she joined the archaeology major in the volunteer application.

Later, she was successfully admitted to the Department of Archaeology of Zhengzhou University. During her studies, the Department of Archaeology often invited Mr. An Jinhuai, Xu Shunzhan, Zhang Jiatai, Yang Huancheng, Zheng Jiexiang, and other seniors of the archaeological community in Henan Province to give lectures and make reports, so that she learned a lot of professional knowledge and also had a lot of understanding of the work history of the predecessors of the archaeological community in Henan.

"In the 1950s, the famous 'Liu Hulan' squad in the archaeological community became the object of worship for our girls." Li Suting said that when she was in graduate school, she was deeply shocked by her teacher, Mr. Chen Xu's rigorous academic spirit, dedicated work attitude and demeanor of not letting her eyebrows be raised.

After graduation, Li Suting gave up her college position and went to great lengths to enter a research institute where she could engage in field archaeological excavations. After the work, the leader considered the inconvenience of female comrades working in the field and arranged Li Suting to work indoors. "I think that since I chose the cultural relics and archaeology industry, going down to the field to do excavations is the place that can best reflect the value, so I have repeatedly asked to go down to the field, and finally got my wish." Li Suting said.

Judged as "unpretentious", she rarely wears skirts

Many years later, Li Suting still can't forget her friend's slightly ridiculous evaluation of her - "How come you don't have a little femininity?" ”

Field archaeology is a profession that requires long-term business trips, going north to Anyang, south to Nanyang, and west to Sanmenxia. On an archaeological site, it is common to spend several months at a time.

Frequent business trips, long-term away, time to spend with the family is less. However, the lover who is also engaged in the industry of cultural relics and archaeology has given her strong support, and the child's grandfather and grandmother have become her strongest backing, which makes her have no worries when working.

Li Suting confessed that she is not a woman who does not like to wear skirts. The love of beauty, women have it, she does not wear a skirt, it is related to this profession.

She recalled that when she first participated in field archaeology, due to frequent exploration, it was inevitable to bump and bump, and there were only two more serious fractures. In the winter, the weather is cold, and it may be that there are too many colds, resulting in diseases on the joints.

It also became her occupational disease. Li Suting said that in fact, this is not a big deal in the archaeological team. However, such a physical condition is basically incompatible with wearing a skirt. And this is also one aspect of the so-called "no femininity".

Being able to withstand loneliness is her realization

In recent years, archaeology has gradually become popular, and it has also attracted many young people to devote themselves to this field.

Li Suting said that more than 30 years ago, there were only a few girls in the archaeology department where she was located. Nowadays, there are more girls in the archaeology department, and it is basically a situation where there are more women and fewer men.

It is good that more and more girls are studying archaeology and participating in field archaeology work. She said, however, engaged in field archaeology work, it is far from enough to have enthusiasm, but also to be able to bear hardships and endure loneliness, it is necessary to guard against arrogance and impatience, immerse yourself in hard work, and use the spirit of craftsmanship to keep the original intention.

Li Suting said that field archaeology is different from other professions, which need to be in the wild, hot in summer and cold in winter. On several occasions, although the excavation team made preparations according to the weather forecast and fenced off the archaeological site, the heavy rain poured down and filled the exploration party with water. In winter, heating is a big problem. At the Small Twin Bridge construction site, she had encountered two times of moderate gas, but fortunately, there was no danger.

However, with the progress of the times, the conditions for field archaeology are much better than before. Time is ticking, and we are closer to the age of retirement. Looking back on her archaeological career, Li Suting smiled and said: "After a lifetime of field archaeology, the biggest insight is that apart from archaeology, nothing else will be done." ”

Be serious in the small place, but also in the big place, focus on the work at hand, and then accumulate and persevere, it is possible to obtain unexpected results.

Li Suting recalled that from 2006 to 2008, in order to cooperate with the infrastructure construction of the south-to-north water diversion canal, she participated in the archaeological excavation of the site of the Guandi Temple in Xingyang. This is a small settlement in the late Shang Dynasty, relatively well preserved, the outer ditch, the inner side of the residence, workshop area, tomb area, etc., the functional area is more clearly divided.

"The form of the settlement was completely and completely revealed." Li Suting said that the Guandi Temple project was also selected as one of the top ten archaeological discoveries in China, the top six archaeological discoveries in the country, and the field archaeological quality award in 2007. It is also the first fully disclosed site of a small Shang Dynasty settlement in the south bank of the Yellow River, which has been unanimously praised by experts and leaders.

At the archaeological site, Li Suting has "obsessive-compulsive disorder". She forced herself to do things well, not to make mistakes in excavation, and to be faithful to what her ancestors had left behind. Interpreting history, understanding the past, and restoring ancient societies requires a large amount of real archaeological data.
