Last night, our program took you to visit the Ding's Guanglu Ancestral Hall to appreciate its style and the story of Ding Richang. In fact, in the ancient city of Jieyang, there are two other ancient buildings that are also where Ding Richang lived and studied, that is, the Bailan Mountain Pavilion and the Zhishu Building. Today's "Impressions of the Ancient City" we will continue to explore.

The antique building in front of you is the Completed Bailan Mountain Pavilion, with a two-story wooden building in the shape of a "concave" shape. Stepping on the wooden ladder, the reporter came to the second floor, sat on a wooden chair, opened a book, tasted Gongfu tea, and the gentle sunlight refracted the stars through the glass flower window, which was very beautiful.

Rongcheng District Museum (BailanShan Pavilion) docent Ji Shuting:

Our BailanShan Pavilion is a classic Lingnan-style building with a two-storey wooden building structure in the shape of a "concave" shape, its corridors and buildings are all glazed glass windows, and there are fixed hundred pages above and below the flower windows for lighting and ventilation.

Bailan Mountain Pavilion was built in the Qing Tongzhi period, imitating the Jiangnan collection of famous building Tianyi Pavilion construction, because there is a large patio in the middle of the three sides of the building, the original oval lotus pond, around the pond cultivated dozens of different varieties of orchids, so called Bailan Mountain Pavilion.

Rongcheng District Museum (BailanShan Museum) Docent Ji Shuting:

Located on the east side of Mashan Cellar in Rongcheng District, our BailanShan Pavilion was formerly the private library of Ding Richang, a political activist, reformer, doer and famous bibliophile of the Western affairs movement at the end of the Qing Dynasty.

After more than 100 years of vicissitudes, some buildings of The Bailan Mountain Pavilion have been damaged. From 2016 to 2018, under the attention of Rongcheng District, it was repaired and strengthened and comprehensively repaired, and in 2019, it was rated as a cultural relics protection unit in Guangdong Province, and is now built as a museum in Rongcheng District, which has become a model for the use of historical building protection, repair and revitalization.

After the opening of the museum, the nearby people, as well as kindergartens, elementary schools, and high schools, will organize a place to study at our Bailan Mountain Pavilion, as well as explore history to understand history and understand the culture of our hometown.

In addition to the construction of the Library Building Bailanshan Pavilion, Ding Richang also built a garden with a combination of Suzhou and Hangzhou garden architectural styles and Chaoshan traditional architectural styles at the south river of Rongjiang Outside the east gate of the county town, named 絜園 (commonly known as Ding Family Garden). Today, only the building of the Book Building has been preserved.

Chen Zuohong, Special Researcher of Chaoshan Historical and Cultural Research Center:

In February and June of the second year of Guangxu, the emperor gave the princes and ministers, the Hanlin Yuan of the inner court, and the governors or inspectors of the local provinces, all of which were given two books, one called "Strategy for Pacifying the Cantonese Bandits" and the other "Strategy for Pacifying the Bandits". Later, the Guangxu Emperor gave another book, which was "Collected Poems of the Tongzhi Emperor". Therefore, in order to store these three books, he named this building "Zhi Shu Lou".

The Library is also an important place for Ding Richang to collect books, live, read books and receive guests in his later years.

It was October of the fifth year of the Guangxu Dynasty of the Qing Dynasty, the famous foreign affairs thinker and political commentator named Wang Tao, who was originally friends with Ding Richang, came here to visit him when he was in Guangzhou, and lived in this place for about a week, during which the two people have been accompanied, including discussing military and state affairs in peacetime.

After more than 140 years of wind and rain, the overall structure of the library is basically complete, but it has obviously become a dangerous house. Experts and scholars in our city urgently hope that the library building can be protected and repaired.

When it is repaired, it is also possible to strengthen the use of this place by holding some exhibitions to let the audience understand modern history and enhance the education of patriotism, and then this place can also develop tourism, and our ancient city can develop tourism and education in traditional culture, which I think is of great significance.
