Editor's Note

A thousand years of cultural veins are cultivated, and only then can we obtain the essence of a city. General Secretary Xi Jinping stressed that historical and cultural heritage not only vividly tells the past, but also profoundly affects the present and the future, and it is necessary to make the cultural relics collected in museums, the heritage displayed on the vast land, and the words written in ancient books come alive.

Xinhui has a long history and profound cultural heritage, known as "Qianqiu County" and "Coastal Zoulu", and is a famous historical and cultural city in Guangdong Province. This land is worth planting historical genes in their own blood for generations of Xinhui people, and natural treasures are the best bearers. This newspaper has set up a column of "Wuhua Historical Shadow" to take you close to the Xinhui Museum, "zero distance" to feel the treasures of Xinhui Wuhua, and to feel the old style and historical years of this ancient city.

In addition to the "Wooden Beauty" oil painting, the Uli Single Knife and the crocodile skeleton, there are also large rattan drums that have been hidden in the Xinhui Museum for more than 60 years. Originally a thousand-year-old vine from The Great Vine Gorge in Guangxi, the Big Teng Drum came to Xinhui more than 500 years ago, and the rich history behind it is fascinating.

The large rattan drum, made in the Ming Dynasty, is made of a single thick vine cross-cut hollowing out, with a height of 52 cm, a maximum circumference length of 2.8 meters, and a wall thickness of 2-2.8 cm. The drum surface is rounded and the bottom is oval, and although the drum nails are mostly missing, the nail marks are still clearly visible. There are more than twenty existing drum nails that are faintly visible with skins attached to them. The skin on both sides of the drum is missing due to the long-term mold, and only a small section of the drum nails remains. There are two wooden repairs on the rim of the mouth, and the drum body has multiple damage and cracks.

According to the data, the big rattan drum originated from the Guangxi Dateng Gorge in the Ming Dynasty. Dateng Gorge is a narrow valley of the Qianjiang River, named after a large vine spanning both sides of the Bitan River. During the Tianshun period of the Ming Dynasty, the Guangxi peasant rebel army attacked Xinhui and attacked Huicheng many times. At that time, Xinhui County's Chengtaolu (1434-1498) organized local armed forces to "dare to brave soldiers" and repeatedly repelled the siege of the rebel army. In the first year of Chenghua, Tao Lu entered western Guangdong and Guangxi with the official army, defeated the Dayengxia rebel army, and cut off the famous big vine and made a three-sided war drum.

According to Qu Dajun's "Guangdong Xinyu" volume 16, the three sides of the large rattan drum are placed in Guangzhou Dusitang, Zhaoqing Province, and Wuzhou General Bingfu, and the existing Xinhui is unknown to the above side. One of the large cane drums was brought back to Xinhui and displayed in the Shrine of Courage of the Fallen Soldiers in Huicheng.

After Tao Lu's death, the Dare Yong Ancestral Hall was changed to the Sanguang Gong Ancestral Hall dedicated to Tao Lu, where the large teng drum was stored for more than 500 years. Now we see that the big rattan drum has a triangular gap, and there is an interesting legend behind this gap, and the folk legend that the big rattan drum can cure all diseases is a treasure for the new society. Therefore, women often went to the Sanguang Ancestral Hall to ask for a small piece of boiling water to heal the disease, and after a long time, the rattan drum was cut into a big gap.
