Buying a TV to honor your parents but not using the TV is not angry enough

Before the Spring Festival, Zhang Qiang bought a Xiaomi smart TV for his parents, which is considered to be filial piety to the second elder. Unexpectedly, the second old man made a mistake, there is not a button on the TV, there is no Chinese character on the remote control, after clicking on the red switch button, it is more ignorant, the huge screen, are the posters of various dramas, click to play the show, broadcast on the request to register as a member.

"I don't watch this, I just want to watch "News Network", the father told Zhang Qiang, Zhang Qiang took the remote control, found that the above does not say Chinese characters, many buttons do not even have symbols. The top red small sign is the key to opening, the sign on the button below does not know what it means, and then down is a ring, not even the signs of the upper and lower left and right, the center of the ring seems to be able to press, Zhang Qiang tried, as if it represents "OK".

Below the ring are three small buttons, only the logo has no text, and at the bottom is a vertical bar of buttons with "+" on top and "-" below.

Connect the TV box, connect the set-top box, register the website members, various functions drum for half a day, and when the central set comes out, the weather forecast has been broadcast.

After tossing and turning for nearly an hour, the old father did not watch the "News Network", how to teach him to use tv, to ensure that he can watch the program tomorrow, has become a problem again. First turn on the set-top box, then turn on the TV, select the signal source, a remote control in the left hand, a remote control in the right hand, and teach it several times before it is difficult for the second old to learn. Afraid that his parents would not be able to turn on the TV next time, Zhang Qiang wrote the steps on a sticky note paper and pasted it on the TV cabinet to be relieved.

Similar situations on the Internet complain a lot, about "TV will not be used" is not only the topic of the elderly, many young and middle-aged people who are accustomed to the Internet have also posted to express dissatisfaction with the complexity of TV operations.

On the "Douban Network" where young people gather more, a young man who has just graduated from college posted that he did not watch much TV when he was studying in high school, and the impression was a set-top box, which was no different from the TV when he was a child. When I went to college, I rarely touched television, and when I came home from college, I found that I was "blind". "There is a bunch of messy things on the page, using Youku Tencent iQiyi or something ok, similar to mobile phones." I won't get the rest either. Later, I put down a few APPS, a look at the serious channel on the card, a look at a variety of advertising channels but very smooth. ”

On zhihu, some netizens posted that TV would not be used, and its title was: "People who really want to watch TV with TV will not use TV at all." The netizen claimed to be a "young man who accepts new things very quickly", but he said that watching TV requires two remote controls to be changed back and forth, and every time his mother wants to watch TV, he has to adjust it first. This year, he changed to a new TV, he found that even himself is very difficult, too many functions can not find what he wants, switch an interface to change a remote control, and wait for dozens of seconds of advertising in the middle. 7 or 8 minutes can't find what you want, "Tune up to angry!" ”

Surveys showed that half of the people turned on the TV and couldn't find the show they wanted to watch

Over the years, the problem of difficulties encountered by the elderly in using intelligent electronic devices has attracted the attention of the government and society. At the social level, some social organizations have carried out teaching on the use of smart electronic devices for the elderly. For example, shell public welfare launched the "I will teach you to use the mobile phone" project.

Since 2018, Shell Charity has been in more than 100 cities, with 450,000 broker volunteers, helping the elderly in the community learn smartphone-related functions by providing regular mobile phone training and store consulting services for the elderly in need in the community.

However, Beijing Youth Daily learned from Shell Public Welfare that they do not have teaching content for the elderly to use television. On the Internet, there are no public welfare projects that can teach the elderly to use television. Some netizens posted and asked: How to teach the elderly to use TV? The one with the most likes in the following post is: read the manual.

In February 2022, the State Grid of China released a research report entitled "2022 Domestic Market Ageing TV Research Report". The report notes that when faced with difficulties, respondents tend to ask about their children, and some search the Internet for usage. However, 27.2% of the respondents said that they "simply gave up and did not look at it".

The report on China Home Grid pointed out that the elderly group has always been the audience that contributes the most to TV ratings, but the current TV products are not very friendly to the elderly. These include the need for multiple remote controls for TV interaction, too many auxiliary devices required to watch TV, the layers of user interfaces, and the lack of smooth screens.

The survey report collected 1191 survey samples, the survey subjects are 50 years old age group, mainly distributed in provincial capital cities, half of which are from the eastern and coastal first-tier cities.

The survey found that respondents watched the highest proportion of programs on various channels through television sets, followed by TV sets to watch their favorite film and television dramas or variety shows and watch TV shows. There are fewer video chats with the TV.

Of the respondents, 12.8 percent said televisions were less easy to operate, and another 2.8 percent said they were "very difficult to operate." Among the difficult options encountered in the process of using smart TVs, 49.6% of the respondents said that "they can't go directly to the TV programs they want to watch after booting", and the second and third options are "devices don't know how to switch between each other" and "complex operations, don't know how to find the content you want to watch." These two accounted for 28% and 20.9%, respectively.

For the use of the remote control, "there are too many remote controls, do not know which one to use", "can't see the remote control buttons", "the remote control will not press or the old press is wrong" in the first three places.

Television adaptive aging requirements have been released voice interaction or for solutions

In fact, the elderly use of television difficulties, the relevant departments also attach great importance to, June 29, 2021, by the telecommunications terminal industry association, China Electronic Video Industry Association sponsored by the intelligent terminal aging standard conference, "mobile terminal aging technical requirements", "mobile terminal aging test method", "smart TV aging design technical requirements" three group standards have been released.

The standard is to implement the "Notice on the Implementation Plan for Effectively Solving the Difficulties of the Elderly in Using Intelligent Technology" issued by the General Office of the State Council. At the meeting, representatives of Huawei, Skyworth, OPPO, Xiaomi, vivo, Glory and other terminal enterprises jointly promised to strengthen the awareness of serving the elderly, carry out research and innovation of age-appropriate technologies, promote the implementation of age-appropriate standards, and help the elderly cross the digital divide.

In the "Smart TV Ageing Design Technical Requirements" (hereinafter referred to as the "Requirements"), it is required that the TV should use assistive technology or auxiliary functions to improve the convenience of the elderly for the use of various functions of the smart TV in simple mode. After the Smart TV is turned on, the user should be allowed to choose whether to enter Shortcut Mode. When powering on the system for the first time, the user should be allowed to choose whether to enter universal mode or simple mode.

The "Requirements" indicate that in simple mode, clear voice, normal subtitles, screen magnification, etc. should be turned on by default, and the TV should support font size adjustment. In concise mode, icons and symbols should provide corresponding text titles.

The "requirements" are also clearly stipulated for the remote control. Suitable for the elderly remote control, to have a clear, easy to identify the key label, to maintain sufficient spacing between the keys, the key should have a key tone, the minimum contact surface of the key is not less than 6×6 cm. At the same time, the remote control should support one-handed operation, and generally should be completed by a single button.

The most interesting point in the aforementioned survey report of China's home power grid is that when asked what functions the elderly "want the TV to have", 47.9% of the elderly chose a very smart answer - get rid of the remote control and control the TV operation completely through voice. It can be seen that the main reason for the distress caused by smart TVs to the elderly is because "intelligence is not enough".

Qing surveyed | smart TVs are not smart enough to force back the elderly voice interaction or as a solution

Lu Shenghua, editor-in-chief of the State Grid of China, told Beijing Youth Daily that the original intention of the website to do this survey was to see that many children bought TVs for the elderly as New Year goods before the Spring Festival, but found that the elderly would encounter many difficulties when using TVs. When the website editors communicated, they also mentioned that their elders would encounter situations that they would not be able to operate when using television.

As an industry media, the State Grid of China has paid attention to this phenomenon. So they conducted the survey and completed it through questionnaires and interviews.

Lu Shenghua believes that the research report basically shows the problems of the elderly when using television. He believes that voice interaction should be a good solution, because voice communication can avoid making difficulties for some elderly people with poor writing ability or low education. And voice communication is very convenient, the elderly want to watch what, say it out loud, TV can be accurately found.

According to Lv Shenghua, there are already many mainstream companies in the market promoting the way of voice interaction, which is also a direction in the industry. However, there will be some problems in speech recognition, such as some speech recognition rates are not high, and local dialects will also have an impact, which also requires TV manufacturers to continue to improve.
