The elephant herd is still active in the woodland near Longwu Town

On July 12, this reporter learned from the provincial headquarters for the safety and security work of Asian elephants moving north and south from Yunnan to the south that from 17:00 on July 11 to 17:00 on July 12, the elephant herd moved 8.8 kilometers to the southeast and continued to move in the woodland near Longwu Town in Shiping County. The elephant herd is within the monitoring range, and the human elephant is safe.

The provincial command headquarters requires the on-site command headquarters to grasp the movement of the elephant group in real time, strengthen research and risk assessment; organize experts to investigate and judge the migration route of the elephant herd on the spot, and guide the deployment and control on the spot; strengthen aerial monitoring, coordinate the forest fire-fighting unmanned aerial vehicle monitoring backbone force stationed on the front line for 24 hours of uninterrupted monitoring; coordinate technical units, and set up infrared cameras in key prevention and control areas.

Carry out one-by-one inspections of water conservancy facilities such as agricultural irrigation ponds within the activity area of the target group of the on-site command headquarters to strictly prevent juvenile elephants from falling into deep ponds and causing safety hazards; organize ground personnel to track and deploy mobile, increase the setting of food feeding and drinking points for elephants in the forest, and scientifically guide the elephant herds to migrate south. On the same day, a total of 212 emergency response personnel and police forces were put in, 54 emergency vehicles, 124 excavators and other engineering vehicles, 18 unmanned aerial vehicles were dispatched, 1673 people from 542 households were evacuated, 0.8 tons of elephant food was fed, and 75 vehicles and 176 people were persuaded to return.
