Jimu news reporter Lin Chuhan

When the Jimu News reporter first brushed up on Xie Ting's skiing video, in addition to being attracted by the charm of his free ride on the snow in the video, he also noticed that his social page was a long list of weighty titles: founder of China Snow Mountain Ice Brigade Ski Club, men's champion of China's first ski technology grand prix, five consecutive champions of China Alpine Ski Solomon Cup, one of the first top ten gold medal coaches in Chongli, China Alpine Skiing National Referee, China Volkswagen Ski Senior Evaluator, New Zealand NZSIA Level I, Japanese SAJ Technical Grade...

The 35-year-old Xie Ting, a native of Huangtuzui Village, Chongli District, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, did not think that many years ago, he and his fellow villagers would change their fate because of the snow. From snow security to national refereeing in alpine skiing, what has he experienced over the years? Curious, on February 25, a reporter from Jimu News interviewed Xie Ting by phone, in which Xie Ting stressed that his life could be changed because of the ice and snow and the Beijing Winter Olympics...

From "dry ducks on the snow" to professional ski instructors

At the age of 16, After graduating from a secondary school, Xie Ting went to Beijing to work, and later returned to Chongli to run the shuttle, and in 2003, he came to Chongli Wanlong Ski Resort as a security guard by chance. At that time, his task was to drive snowmobiles to pick up tourists injured by skiing and take them to their homes or hospitals. Seeing more injuries, Xie Ting felt that skiing was too dangerous, and even had resistance. So although he works in the snow field, Xie Ting is a "dry duck on the snow".

The turning point of things was that Xie Ting and his friends lost in a bet, the bet was that he had to slide down the mountain, although he could not ski, but with the mentality of not admitting defeat, Xie Ting slid down from the 300-meter slope, but I don't know whether it was talent or the newborn calf was not afraid of the tiger's momentum, the first time on the intermediate road, Xie Ting actually did not fall, but also because he would not "brake", he slid until there was no snow before stopping. Recalling the experience again many years later, Xie Ting smiled and said, "Although it was my first time skiing, I was also scared, but with my youthful vigor, I still gritted my teeth and rushed down." ”

But it was after that skiing experience that Xie Ting found that skiing was "a bit interesting", and at that time, in order not to "lose people", Xie Ting was determined to bite this hard bone, so he began to practice skiing, and later simply changed his job to ski rescue team.

In 2005, a Japanese professional skier came to the ski resort for pre-race training, and Xie Ting also got the opportunity to learn systematically because he climbed the steep slopes again and again to help the athlete plant the flag gate. At this time, Xie Ting had a higher goal in his heart, that is, to become a ski instructor. In order to achieve this goal, Xie Ting used his spare time to watch ski teaching videos on the Internet to learn, and also took out a notebook to write down the main points, and even repeatedly practiced in front of the mirror how to teach the students... Thanks to Tse's efforts, he finally became a ski instructor at Wanlong Ski Resort in 2009.

In 2012, through the selection, Nicholas Tse was given the opportunity to go to the Japanese snow park to exchange studies. The destination is an international ski school in Japan Ski Resort. In this school, students from various countries are gathered, and it is here that Xie Ting realized the gap between the ski facilities and teaching systems between China and Japan. "For learners of different levels, the Japanese side has special rating rules, and each level is equipped with a different syllabus and teaching process guidance. The Japanese take ski instruction in such detail. The teaching process is also very good, what to do in the first step, what to do in the second step are clearly written, I have skated for so many years in the snow, I have never seen this. ”

This trip to Japan also made Xie Ting feel that he had seen a more open world outside, and he also began to think about what was "snow field", what was "skiing", and what was "teaching". Three months later, Nicholas Tse was certified to the technical level by the Japan Ski Federation (SAJ) in Japan, so much so that he was featured in promotional videos for the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

"Ice and snow and the Winter Olympics gave me a different life"

For all Chinese, July 31, 2015 at 17:57 is definitely a day of a lifetime, and when IOC President Bach announced on the TV that the city that won the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics was "Beijing (Zhangjiakou), China", all of them boiled over.

In 2018, he resigned from the Wanlong Ski Resort where he had worked for 14 years, set up his own club——— Snow Mountain Ice Brigade Club, and began to engage in ski skills training and the sale of ski clothing equipment, and his operating income increased year by year. "It will slip and teach, so can I also 'cut' it?" The successful bid for the Beijing Winter Olympics is a turning point for Zhangjiakou. After the successful bid for the Winter Olympics in Beijing and Zhangjiakou, Chongli, as a small city of the Winter Olympics, has been favored by more and more ski enthusiasts. "Chongli's major ski resorts are beginning to be full of tourists, more and more public ski competitions, and there is a great demand for ski referees, so I want to work hard in the direction of referees." Nicholas Tse said.

Therefore, he actively participated in ski referee training courses held in Hebei Province and City, and served as an assistant referee in some ice and snow events held in Zhangjiakou City. In December 2018, he obtained the provincial first-level referee qualification certificate for alpine skiing. At this time, Xie Ting hopes to be the referee at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, and witness the wonderful moments of China and the world's ice and snow athletes on his doorstep. However, referees must be national referees. Therefore, in May 2020, after the training, theoretical examination and practical assessment of various events of the Winter Games Center of the General Administration of Sport, combined with the opinions of the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee and the technical officials of relevant international individual sports organizations, 691 people were awarded the title of national referee of ice and snow projects, and Xie Ting was awarded the national referee of alpine skiing this time.

However, life is always a little regrettable, this time because of serious waist injuries and complicated affairs Xie Ting finally failed to participate in the refereeing work of the Beijing Winter Olympics, but for this Beijing Winter Olympics, Xie Ting has also been paying attention, "not able to participate in this Winter Olympics, really regret", he said that although he failed to participate in the refereeing work of the Beijing Winter Olympics, he will continue to help the development of the ice and snow industry in the future!

"Our current volkswagen skiing is diverse, and for skiing technology, there are different modules and ideas, but there is no systematic standard." Nicholas Tse wanted to be the one who helped unify skiing norms. He also has a second idea, that is, to do a "one-stop service" to meet the needs of guests from all over the world. "My goal is to make this club the biggest in the country!" Beijing, Shanghai, Yunnan, Anhui, Qinghai, Gansu... Where there are ski slopes, there is a base for the Snow Mountain Ice Brigade Ski Club. ”

From a farmer's son to a national referee, Xie Ting's fate was completely changed by ice and snow. Like Tse Ting, more and more rural youth are being trained to become ski instructors at Chongli Ski Resort, and 40% of Chongli ski instructors are now locals. Some elderly villagers work as security guards and waiters in the snow park, and some villagers have opened farms, and their lives have been greatly improved.

"Ice and snow and the Winter Olympics have given me a different life, if there is no snow field, no Winter Olympics, I may be farming, or working in other places." Nicholas Tse said with a smile. (Images and video footage provided by Nicholas Tse himself)
