STEM Star Lesson: Pulsating Light and Shadow

author:Horn Hammer STEM Science Laboratory

For C1 age children, controlling the shadow is a very interesting thing, from the daily phenomenon of life, we will step on the shadow in the usual game, project hand shadow, but also in some movies to see interesting or terrifying shadows; from a more macroscopic level, such as a lunar eclipse, that is, the sun's light is just blocked by the earth, the light can not reach, the phenomenon of black shadows on the moon. Light and shadow are everywhere in our lives.

Three

Course Background:

When light encounters opaque objects during propagation, it is partially blocked (the straight line propagation of light), and when projected onto the ground, it forms an area that part of the light cannot reach. The image of such an object that blocks the light and reflects on the ground or other objects is a shadow.

Four

Context Import:

When we are in a dark room, is there any way to see our surroundings? Pull back the curtains and let the light shine in; turn on the lights... There are many ways, but these methods will make us think of the word light, yes, light is used for illumination, there is light, the eyes can see.

There are many objects in life that can be used for illumination: lights, flashlights, mobile phones, glow sticks, and so on. But with the use and observation of light, we find that the light is blocked by objects to form a shadow, which is what we often call a shadow.

Project focus

STEM Star Lesson: Pulsating Light and Shadow

In the "Pulsating Light and Shadow" project, we will focus on a kind of "shadow puppet play" related to life experience, let children participate, make and arrange a shadow puppet play, and provide an interesting way to study light and shadow, which can be divided into five parts: problem and aggregation, investigation and research, design and production, display and evaluation, expansion and application.

1

Problems and Aggregations:

In order to draw students' attention to shadow puppetry, we turned the project learning task into a situational challenge: children need to prepare different shadow puppet performances in different situations. However, because the child has no experience in the production of props and the presentation of the performance of the shadow puppet play, he needs the support of a general director.

1. What is the principle of shadow puppetry?

2. What tools do I need to use?

3) We need a proper story!

4. We may need help from teachers and parents.

In order to allow students to think rationally and pertinently, they can watch some shadow puppet performance videos, learn advanced experience, and conduct relevant reading and information inquiries to formulate an overall performance plan and clarify the steps of exploration.

2

Survey & Research:

Prepare the three most important elements of a shadow puppet show in a targeted manner: lighting, props, and effects.

1. How to adjust the position of the hole to be unified (small hole imaging)?

2. What happens when an obstacle is encountered on the path of light propagation?

3. How does the conclusion of this conclusion help us to complete the big project of shadow puppetry?

4. How to try to change the shape, size and direction of the shadow?

3

Design & Production:

Projects are divided into small groups, usually in groups of 4-5 people. In shadow puppetry projects, we pay attention to emphasizing the importance of the team and the role of the individual in the team. After the first group rehearsal, we can try to answer these questions:

1. What are the places I am most satisfied with today's event?

2. What else can be improved? How can it be improved?

3. Is there any unreasonable division of labor in the group?

4. Do you have any suggestions for our group?

These questions allow students to constantly reflect and adjust their position and role in the team, and clarify the importance of division of labor and cooperation. However, it should also be noted that in the design and production process, the choice of the script, the design of the scene, and the production of props will directly affect the effect of the final program presentation.

4

Showcase & Evaluation:

Display and evaluation is an indispensable part of a complete learning activity, and the display of the theme of "shadow puppetry" is not only based on the scientific principles of light, but also affected by complex factors such as teamwork, hand operation, light design, prop making, etc., which undoubtedly brings new challenges to children. And we have been emphasizing the role of the team throughout the implementation of the project, everyone is preparing for the final display, are working hard for the final task, so in the display link, we must pay attention to guiding students to pay attention to their own efforts in the process of participation, guide students to reflect and summarize their own gains in the whole process, rather than just paying attention to the effect of the performance.

5

Expansion and Application:

The completion of a project, to integrate all aspects of the work, I hope that children through the experience of such activities to develop their ability to analyze and deal with problems, the project can be analyzed from the activity review, knowledge expansion two aspects.

Event Review:

Help your child organize the complete process they go through in completing this task, and refine the processes and methods for dealing with complex issues with a view to migrating to other issues, such as:

1. Who in your group contributed the most in the process of solving problems? Why?

2. Your group has successfully completed the task, can you tell us more about your design principles?

3. Has your group borrowed some practices from other groups? What did you learn? Why?

4. What is the reason why your group did not complete the task? If you were asked to do it again, what would change?

Knowledge Development:

This part focuses on the extension and enrichment of scientific concepts, all knowledge is related, the purpose of our learning science is to explain reality and solve practical problems, so we must guide children to comprehensively use scientific knowledge and scientific methods to solve problems, encourage children to explore more problems, go out from the classroom, and find more learning methods and ways.

epilogue

STEM Star Lesson: Pulsating Light and Shadow

In summary, "shadow puppetry" is a comprehensive STEM learning project, in the design and implementation of this project, you can find the child's reaction and change in the entire activity, from reflection to improvement, and constantly adjust the strategy according to the actual situation at any time, not only limited to a specific lesson itself, but to obtain a method that can be expanded to solve the problem and analyze the problem. This is indispensable ability to elevate.
