Nothing is greater than dissatisfaction; there is no greater blame than desire.
Through serenity and calmness, the Dao maintains order in the universe.
Through serenity and calmness, the Dao maintains order in the universe.
Lao Tzu said: "The misfortune is greater than the dissatisfaction, and the blame is greater than the desire", the root of human suffering is too much desire! For example, the desire for power, fame and fortune, greed, lust, appetite, etc., can bring pain and misfortune to people, if you let these desires go unchecked, and these desires eat away at your own heart, it is easy to lose your original nature, suffer from gain and loss, and never be satisfied.
And the really powerful people are often "desireless and rigid" people, the desirelessness here does not mean that there is really no desire at all, but emphasizes that you can restrain your desires, do not let yourself get lost in desires, and can suppress your desires well for your greatest goal, or for the life you want.
Fan Li, the doctor of yueguo, is a powerful person who is "just without desire". Fan Li assisted The King of Yue for more than 20 years, and after Wu Wangfu sent his life to capture Gou Jian, it was also Fan Li who gave Gou Jian a plan to restore the country, and followed Gou Jian to wu as a slave, and finally helped Gou Jian to destroy Wu's hegemony. After the restoration of the country, Fan Ligong retired, first rafting on Taihu Lake, then changing his name to Tao Zhugong, becoming rich in business, and finally becoming a generation of "Shang Sheng".
The "displeasure" in "No greater evil than disobedience" is one of the most important characteristics of the human mind. It can bring all kinds of distress, but it also leads people to cross the huge gap between humans and animals. "Dissatisfaction" has played an important role in the evolution of human beings, driving mankind out of the long era of primitive barbarism, and also helping human beings to gradually get rid of the ignorant and ignorant state.
However, "dissatisfaction" also reflects the ambitions of human beings. It is precisely because of it that people take various measures to satisfy their desires. Therefore, Lao Tzu described "dissatisfaction" as the greatest scourge of mankind, hoping to warn people to be content and happy.
The "blame" of "blame is greater than desire" is fault and fault; "desire" refers to the satisfaction of desire. The meaning of this sentence is that the greatest fault is insatiable greed. As can be seen from the foregoing, both desire and dissatisfaction will cause sin and calamity, and "desire" will not only be abominable, but the consequences will be very serious. Indulgence is an unconstrained act of wantonness, "dissatisfaction" is a radical act of introvertedness, and insatiable greed is the infinite expansion of the unsatisfied human heart. These behaviors can cause a lot of loss to people and are therefore undesirable.
Why does life produce desires? This arises from the imperfection of each individual. That is to say, every individual is flawed, it can not achieve self-satisfaction, do not seek external objects, so it needs to constantly ask outward to supplement its defects, which is the cause of desire.
Desires and thoughts are fickle, suddenly born and destroyed. With such a thing, will we end up getting something? And leaving all this behind, what can we leave? Life is a process. In the process, we encounter all sorts of temptations. If we devote all our energies to filling bottomless desires, if we abandon excessive desires and instead explore and pursue our own value and meaning, then everyone's life will become different and colorful.
