As a securities investor, you can always observe the prices of securities of various companies and think of them as some grids. Most of the time, you don't have to do anything, just watch. Every once in a while, you'll find a 'good ball' that is slow, straight, and falls right in the middle of your favorite grid. Then you go all out. In this way, regardless of your talent, you can greatly improve your uphill rate.

♚ Minutes of the Fed's January meeting: Both interest rate hikes and balance sheet reductions may be faster than the previous one, which may be suitable for a large future balance sheet reduction

The minutes of the meeting released on Wednesday, 16th, Eastern Time, show that the Fed policymakers attending the meeting believe that whether it is a rate hike or a reduction in the size of the balance sheet (balance sheet reduction), the pace of the Fed's tightening of the currency may be faster than the previous interest rate hike and balance sheet reduction.

1) Most Fed officials mentioned at the FOMC monetary policy meeting that "if inflation does not pull back as they expected, it would be appropriate for the FOMC to withdraw stimulus at a rate faster than currently expected."

2. The FOMC acknowledges that in the second half of 2021, the scope of inflationary pressures in the United States will expand, which brings the risk that FOMC will "skew inflation expectations upward".

3) Fed observers have failed to find clearer clues from the minutes of the meeting as to whether a 50 basis point rate hike and balance sheet reduction are possible in March.

♚ U.S. retail sales rebounded, the biggest increase in 10 months

U.S. retail sales rose 3.8% month-on-month in January, with expectations of 2% and -1.9% in previous months, commerce department data showed wednesday. The increase was the largest since March 2021, underscoring the resilience of Americans to commodity demand. While the Omicron strain and the surge in CORONAVIRUS cases could dampen service spending this month, improved labor markets have helped consumers continue to buy products like cars and furniture, defying inflation at its highest level in decades.

U.S. retail sales surged in January as auto and online consumption soared. However, the unadjusted retail sales data for January plunged 18.5% month-on-month, a record high, showing the impact of the surge in inflation.

After a disappointingly severe decline in retail sales in December, analysts believe that pent-up demand will resurface in January, with retail sales expected to rise 2.0% month-on-month in January (despite a collapse in consumer confidence, especially buying attitudes and financials), but in fact, analysts still underestimated the market's rebound, with overall retail sales up a staggering 3.8%.

This is the largest increase in U.S. retail sales sequentially since the surge in stimulus spending in March 2021.

The US 10-year Treasury yield fell after the data was released. The dollar index rose overall after short-term shocks.

♚ Mekushing crude oil inventories hit a new three-year low, and crude oil is still approaching $100

On Wednesday, February 16, EST, the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration (EIA) announced:

(1) U.S. crude oil inventories increased by 1.121 million barrels from the previous week last week, and the market expected a decrease of 2.174 million barrels, compared with a decrease of 4.756 million barrels in the previous week.

U.S. gasoline inventories fell by 1.332 million barrels sequentially last week, and market expectations increased by 500,000 barrels, compared with a decrease of 1.644 million barrels in the previous week.

(2) Crude oil inventories in Cushing, the main delivery region of U.S. crude oil futures, fell by 1.9 million barrels month-on-month last week, and total inventories fell to their lowest level since September 2018.

After the data was released, in the intraday session this Wednesday, Brent crude oil futures remained stable above $95 / barrel, up more than 2% intraday, the United States WTI crude oil quickly regained $94 after falling below $94 in the short term, and the intraday gains also quickly exceeded 2% after narrowing to within 2%, all of which are expected to erase most of Tuesday's declines, approaching the highest closing level in more than seven years set on Monday.

Some media pointed out that the rise in oil prices means that Russia's national income has increased, giving Russia the ability to buffer in the event of Western sanctions. Although Biden has repeatedly called on Middle Eastern oil producers to increase production, Saudi Arabia, the largest oil producer, has chosen to side with Russia and follow the OPEC+ agreement, and has not stepped up its pace to reduce the scale of production cuts.

♚ Global financial regulators warn that crypto assets threaten financial stability

According to a report released by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) on Wednesday, digital assets could soon threaten global financial stability due to their size, structural vulnerabilities and increasing ties to the traditional financial system.

The report focuses on areas where they use leverage, technology vulnerabilities and liquidity shortages. There are also concerns about investors and consumers' low awareness of crypto assets, as well as the risks of money laundering, cybercrime and ransomware.

The rapid evolution and international nature of such assets means that authorities should consider "a timely and advance assessment of possible policy options," the report said. This includes prioritizing cross-border and cross-sector collaboration, including accelerating message sharing to keep pace with crypto assets.

The FSB is made up of representatives from institutions such as the European Central Bank, the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve.

♚ White House Releases Updated Critical and Emerging Technologies List

Based on the publicly available and updated CET list, the United States coordinated the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) with the National Council of Science and Technology (NSC) and the National Security Council (NSC) through the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) to facilitate an extensive inter-agency review process that ultimately led to the collaborative completion of the list.

The NSTC said the list was created to secure future U.S. technology leadership, work with allies to advance and maintain a competitive edge in science and technology in key areas, and address so-called technological security threats. The NSTC pointed out that the new version of the list of key and emerging technologies will play an important role in supporting the upcoming US technological competitiveness and national security strategy. In particular, the NSTC emphasizes that this list can serve as a reference for U.S. executive branches and agencies in supporting U.S. national technological security, protecting sensitive technologies, and competing for international talent.

A few days ago, Himalaya Asset Management, which undertook the assets of the Munger family, disclosed its U.S. stock holdings.

Himalaya Asset Management, which undertakes the responsibility of asset management of the Munger family, was founded in 1997 by a Chinese investor, Li Lu.

According to the disclosure information: As of the end of the fourth quarter of 2021, Himalaya Assets held a total of 6 US stocks, corresponding to a market value of 2.665 billion US dollars, equivalent to 16.96 billion yuan.

The portfolio shows that semiconductor stock Micron Technology has become the number one U.S. stock holding of Himalaya assets, while the once heavy stock Pinduoduo has completely disappeared from the portfolio. Heavy positions in technology stocks, liquidation of many domestic preferences of Pinduoduoduo, the "aesthetics" of top value investment institutions seem to be far away from domestic institutions.
