Built in 1145, Ghulam Inn is the former priest's residence, inn and bar; it is also the oldest building under the edge of Wharton in England. Long before the building was built, its story began in the low-lying wetlands near Porter Pond. This land is located at the intersection of 2 veins, which some people believe contain extremely high spiritual energy. Using maps, these routes can be traced directly back to Stonehenge, England's most famous holy site. Legend has it that energy from Stonehenge passes through the magic net, providing supernatural power to the land. In addition, the site is home to a 5,000-year-old pagan cemetery.
The building first housed the masons, slaves and workers who built St. Mary's Church. Located across the street from the Ghulam Inn, the stream on the inn grounds had to be diverted around the church. Many believe that the redirection of the water on the site of the Ghulam Inn opened an entrance to the dark energy.
One of the most famous legends surrounding this haunted English house is that a witch was burned at the stake. The burning took place in the 16th century, at the height of prosecutions against those who did not believe in government-sanctioned Christianity. Many believe that the woman's soul still haunts a room at the Ghulam Inn, where she took refuge shortly before she was captured and killed. Today, this room is called the "Witch's Room".
Sole occupant
In the late 1960s, a man named John Humphreys bravely made the Ghulam Inn his home, thus preserving the building and its story. John bought the house in 1968 and was introduced to angry ghosts on his first night in his new home. After sleeping, he claimed that a demonic force grabbed his arm and dragged him out of bed and across the room.
John Humphreys is now in his 80s and is the only living occupant of the Ancient Ram Inn. In his later years he devoted himself to the preservation of this ancient building, which made him pay almost everything. His wife and three daughters left the haunted old building, and the man was bent on protecting it.
In his home, Humphreys found evidence of sacrifice and demonic worship. Even more disturbing was the skeletal remains of children found under the stairs. Broken daggers were found in the skeleton, which he believed were used in deadly rituals and then broken so that they could no longer be used.
The ghost never stopped Humphreys from maintaining his residence there. Although his wife and daughter left him at the hotel, he remained, protecting the building. Night after night, the spirit returned, but Humphreys persevered for more than 50 years until his death at the end of 2017.
Who owns the hotel now?
Caroline Humphreys, daughter of John Humphreys, now owns the old Ram Inn and invites archaeologists to study its unique history. The hotel is still open to visitors; most are paranormal tourists who test their courage by staying overnight.
