Lantern riddles originated from word games such as hidden languages and literal riddles in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. During the Southern Song Dynasty, every Lantern Festival, the literati and inkers began to write riddles on the yarn lamp, allowing people who enjoyed the lanterns to guess the riddles and increase the atmosphere of the festival. In "Wulin Old Things and Lanterns", "using silk lamps to cut poems, sometimes ridiculing jokes, and painting characters, hiding hidden words, and old Beijing proverbs, teasing pedestrians..." is a description of this lively scene. At the end of the Song Dynasty and the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty, guessing lantern riddles gradually began to become a popular custom. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, this custom was spread throughout the north and south of the great river, and the grandeur was unprecedented, and the riddle masters appeared in an endless stream. In "Dream of the Red Chamber", there are many texts describing the lantern riddle of the Lantern Festival. During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, there were also lantern riddle organizations such as the Zhuxi Houshe, the Shooting Tiger Society, and the Pingshe Society.
The prevalence of the custom of guessing riddles has triggered a boom in the world's collation and research of riddles, and some special riddle books have gradually begun to appear. Yu Quyuan's "Hidden Book" in the Qing Dynasty is the earliest published album of lantern riddles, containing 100 riddles. During the Republic of China period, the compilation and publication of riddle books entered a new climax, and "Spring Lantern Talk in the Garden" and "Commentary on The Identification of Lanterns and Tigers" have attracted wide attention. These riddle monographs not only include the masterpieces of lantern riddles that have been handed down through the generations, but also discuss the theories and methods of riddle creation, and make in-depth discussions and summaries of various techniques of lantern riddles, which have made great contributions to the inheritance and development of lantern riddles, which is a treasure of Chinese national culture.
"Ancient and Modern Lantern Riddle Grand View"
The author has a copy of the "Ancient and Modern Lantern Riddle Grand View" from the Republic of China period, published in May 1921, which has a history of 100 years. The book was published and distributed by Shanghai Mainland Books Company, compiled by Li Xiangrong, a native of Zhenhai, Zhejiang. At the top of the cover are 6 large white characters of "Ancient and Modern Riddle Grand View". Due to its age, the cover is worn out and the word "ancient" has been damaged. In the center of the cover is a beautiful picture with a red background, and a lantern full of "riddles" hanging in the air, illuminating a bright flame. A group of lantern-watchers dressed in horse coats and robes are surrounding the lanterns, pointing and pointing, and enthusiastically guessing. At the edge of the picture are plum blossoms in full bloom, which give off a strong Spring Festival atmosphere. Below are words such as "Published by Shanghai Mainland Book Company". The overall design is simple and smooth, full of era characteristics.
The book follows the common book printing style of the Republic of China period, lead printing, traditional script, vertical version, right page binding, and pricing ocean five corners. The book consists of 50 pages, with a preface and a copyright page. The first part of the main text is the format, which briefly introduces various guessing techniques; the second part is the puzzle and the puzzle, the subject matter involves ancient books, poems, place names, characters, etc.; the third part is the mystery. After nearly a hundred years of wind and rain, the pages are yellow, the cover is damaged, but the inner pages are well preserved, which is very rare.
