Winery history

Today's Model for Chateau Naihak dates back to 1777, when Elysee Nairac purchased the estate, where the Naihak family held rich shipping assets and built the ornate castle and core vineyard that remains to this day. Designed and built by the famous architect Jean Mollie, the castle is surrounded by a beautiful garden.

When Elysée died in 1791, his daughters took over the management of the estate. In 1837, they sold the estate to the famous wine figure Bemard Capdeville, who also owned Chateau Broustet, a Sauerean second-class estate. Under Bernard's management, the winery was rated as a Soussak and Bassak ii in 1855.

After Bernard's death in 1861, the Naihak winery went through several iterations until 1971, when the American Tom Heeter took over the winery. Tom Hurt and his ex-wife, Nicole Tari, spent 3 years rebuilding the castle, renovating the buildings, and breaking new levels of the winery's annual output. Today, it continues to flourish under the administration of Nicole Tully and their son Nicole Heeter.

Grown and brewed

The winery's approximately 17 hectares of vineyards are located next to the Garonne River, right next to chateau climens and chateau Coutet, with the 9 hectares of vineyard terroir around the castle preferred. The vineyard topsoil is mainly composed of river alluvial mud and sand, and the bottom layer is limestone soil.

The garden is home to 90% Semillon, 6% Sauvignon Blanc and 4% Muscadelle, with an average vine age of over 40 years.

Once ripe, they are carefully selected and harvested, and the grapes are sent to a gravity press for pressing and slow fermentation in oak barrels. The liquor is then aged in new oak barrels for about 30 months. The long aging of the new oak barrels gives The Nehak wine a slight but distinctive oxidizing taste.
