International Court of Arbitration for Sport: Allows Valieva to continue to participate in the Beijing Winter Olympics

On February 14, the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) issued a ruling against the Russian Olympic Committee team figure skater Vallieva, rejecting the International Olympic Committee, the World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Skating Union's questioning of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency, allowing Valieva to continue to participate in the Beijing Winter Olympics.

International Court of Arbitration for Sport: Allows Valieva to continue to participate in the Beijing Winter Olympics

On February 6, Russian Olympic team figure skater Vallieva competed in the competition.

Vallieva was temporarily suspended by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency due to a positive drug test in a sample provided on December 25, 2021. On February 9, 2022, Vallieva challenged the temporary ban and held a hearing on the same day. Subsequently, the Russian anti-doping agency decided to lift the temporary ban on her and allow her to continue to participate in the Beijing Winter Olympics.

The Decision was challenged by the International Olympic Committee, the World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Skating Union to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport.

After deliberation, the Court of Arbitration for Sport decided to dismiss the challenge applications of the three institutions, holding that although there was a problem of not notifying Valieva of the results of the doping test in time, the fault was not with Valieva herself.

The court also held that if Vallieva is now barred from continuing to participate in the Winter Olympics, it will cause irreparable harm to her.

The statement concluded with a clear statement that the decision to allow the suspension to be lifted was appropriate.
