Explore the future of Dundunzhi Light up dreams and emotions - the birth of the mascot of the Beijing Winter Olympics and the Winter Paralympic Games

On September 17, 2019, at the Shougang Ice Hockey Hall, the mascot of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games "Ice Pier" and the Winter Paralympic Mascot "Snow Rongrong" were unveiled, connecting the future and tradition, integrating sports and culture, embodying inheritance and innovation, and is another perfect combination of Chinese culture and Olympic spirit.

This mascot collection activity draws on the experience of the 2008 Olympic Games and recent Winter Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and has undergone expert review, revision and deepening, social review, legal review and approval procedures. Each link embodies the wisdom and painstaking efforts of industry experts, organizers, creative and revision teams and other relevant parties, and is finally permanently recorded in the history of the Olympic Games.

The ice pier and the snow melt appeared at the same time

The simultaneous collection and evaluation of the mascots of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games and the Mascots of the Winter Paralympic Games embodies the commitment of "synchronous planning, synchronous implementation and equal excitement of the two Olympic Games", and also ensures that the mascots of the two Olympic Games are both different and can achieve the unity of visual image.

The two mascots interpret the dream of science and technology and cultural feelings. The winter Olympic mascot ice pier is based on the panda. The combination of the panda image and the super-energetic ice crystal shell embodies the characteristics of winter ice and snow sports and modern technology. The head shell is taken from the ice and snow sports helmet, decorated with a colorful halo, which is inspired by the national speed skating hall of the Beijing Winter Olympics - "Ice Ribbon", the flowing bright color lines symbolize the ice and snow sports track and 5G high-tech; the heart shape of the left palm represents the host country's warm welcome to friends around the world. The overall image resembles an astronaut, implying the creation of the extraordinary and exploring the future, reflecting the pursuit of excellence, leading the times, and the infinite possibilities for the future.

Ice, which symbolizes purity and strength, is a characteristic of the Winter Olympics. Dundun, which means thick, healthy, lively and cute, fits the overall image of the panda, symbolizing the strong body, tenacious will and inspiring Olympic spirit of the Winter Olympic athletes.

The Mascot of the Winter Paralympic Games, Xue Rongrong, was designed and created based on lanterns. Lanterns represent harvest, festivity, warmth and light. The ruyi shape at the top symbolizes auspicious happiness; the continuous pattern composed of the peace dove and the Temple of Heaven symbolizes peace and friendship and highlights the characteristics of the place where the venue is held; the decorative pattern is integrated into the traditional Chinese paper-cutting art; the snow blocks on the face not only represent the meaning of "Ruixue Mega Year", but also embody the anthropomorphic design, highlighting the cuteness of the mascot. The lantern takes "Chinese red" as the main color, rendering the festive atmosphere of the Chinese New Year in 2022, the body emits light, implying lighting up dreams, warming the world, representing fraternity, courage and strength, embodying the fighting spirit of winter Paralympic athletes and the concept of the Winter Paralympic Games that inspire the world.

Snow, which symbolizes whiteness and beauty, is the characteristic of ice and snow sports. Tolerance means tolerance, tolerance, exchange and mutual learning. Fusion, metaphorical integration, warmth, mutual understanding and integration. Rong Rong expresses the concept of exchanges, mutual learning and harmonious development of world civilizations, and embodies the beautiful vision of creating a more inclusive world and building a community with a shared future for mankind through the Paralympic Movement.

Han Zirong, full-time vice chairman and secretary general of the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee, said that the Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, through the release of mascots, show the world China's spiritual outlook, development achievements and unique charm of Chinese culture in the new era, show the love of the Chinese people for ice and snow sports and their expectations for the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, and express China's beautiful vision of promoting exchanges and mutual learning among world civilizations and building a community with a shared future for mankind.

With the help of "Zhengji" to popularize the Olympic Games

On August 8, 2018, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the successful hosting of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the launching ceremony of the global collection of mascots for the Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games was solemnly held.

The mascot global call is from August 8 to October 31, 2018. In order to fully demonstrate the concept of sharing the Olympic Games and opening up the Olympic Games, the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee has carried out multi-dimensional and multi-perspective collection and promotion activities.

In order to let more children understand the Winter Olympics and fall in love with the Winter Olympics, the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee and the Ministry of Education began to carry out a two-month "Winter Olympic Mascot in My Heart" theme activity in primary and secondary schools across the country in September 2018, using the official website and the official WeChat public account mascot collection column, art class and theme class meeting to mobilize primary and secondary school students to participate in mascot creation.

According to statistics, nearly 15 million primary and secondary school students from more than 45,000 primary and secondary schools across the country participated in the activity, reflecting the great concern and enthusiasm of the majority of young people for the Beijing Winter Olympics.

At the same time, the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee also fully mobilized the extensive participation of professional design institutions, and successively went to Art Colleges and Universities in Beijing, Shijiazhuang, Shanghai, Shenyang, Changchun, Hangzhou, Xi'an, Guangzhou and other places to give special lectures to teachers, students and design institutions of design majors in various provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. Jointly held the Winter Olympic Mascot Design Forum with the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and launched the joint initiative of "Designing for the 2022 Winter Olympics" among 10 famous art academies in the United Nations. At the 2018 International Winter Sports (Beijing) Expo and Beijing International Design Week, mascot collection and promotion activities were also carried out.

From October 20, 2018, the global call for mascot design proposals began to enter a 10-day submission stage, and chinese and foreign applicants continued to flock.

The mascot collection lasted 84 days and a total of 5816 design proposals were received.

-- 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government, Hong Kong, Macao Special Administrative Region, and Taiwan have all submitted works.

——Overseas works from 35 countries on five continents.

Among the contributors to the call for papers, the oldest is 75 years old and the youngest is 3 years old.

Rigorous review to find the right direction

In accordance with the principle of being able to represent the recognized professional level of the international and domestic industries, conducting in-depth research on the image landscape, brand management and communication strategy of the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, understanding the characteristics of young people, and having rich evaluation experience, the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee invited 18 well-known international and domestic experts and athlete representatives to form a mascot expert review committee.

After the selection of the judges, Jiang Xiaoyu, vice president of the Beijing Olympic City Development Promotion Association, served as the chairman of the jury. The judges cover plastic arts, art theory, sports Olympics, animation, film and television, children's literature, etc., with wide representation and professionalism.

From January 7 to 8, 2019, the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee organized an expert review committee to conduct a preliminary evaluation and re-evaluation of all mascots effectively solicited works. In the Shougang Cultural Museum, which can accommodate 400 people for meetings, 5816 works of application are neatly stacked on hundreds of tables on a white background, and each work is hidden from the name and unit of the applicant, and only the works themselves are presented to the judges.

Among these works, there are elk, pandas, tigers, etc. based on animals, unicorns, lanterns, dragon and lion dances, great wall, Huabiao, etc. with traditional Chinese culture as the theme, icemen and snowmen that highlight ice and snow elements, and various shapes of fashion and cartoons.

The preliminary evaluation is the basis of the entire judging work and largely determines the creative direction. By secret ballot, the judges selected 100 pieces from the effective proposals and entered the re-evaluation. During the preliminary evaluation process, the judges also have 5 votes to reconsider the nomination and introduce their favorite but not covered works to other judges, so as to ensure that the excellent works are not forgotten to the greatest extent. The main task of the re-evaluation is to select 10 of the 100 cases and submit them to the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee for consideration.

After preliminary evaluation and re-evaluation, the expert review committee selected 10 groups of candidate design schemes through scoring and ranking. The selected mascot design schemes cover categories such as rare and rare animals in China, Chinese characters, animation shapes, zodiac beasts, ice and snow sports elements, Internet memes, and Spring Festival custom graphics. Among them, 9 groups of design schemes are submitted by professional design institutions and professional designers, and 1 group of design schemes is submitted by primary school students. The partially modified design of the ice pier also draws on the inspiration of this elementary school student's work.

Jiang Xiaoyu said that compared with the 2008 Olympic Games, the number of mascot entries has been greatly improved, reflecting that after the baptism of the 2008 Olympic Games, the design community's understanding and participation in sports and the Olympic Games have been greatly improved, and there are many children's works. In the context of driving 300 million people to participate in ice and snow sports, the collection of mascots is also a process of publicizing and popularizing the Winter Olympics.

Lin Cunzhen, a senior expert in the Cultural Activities Department of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee and the designer of the emblems of the Beijing Winter Olympics and the Winter Paralympic Games, compared with the design of the Emblem of the Winter Olympics in 2017, said that mascots need to emphasize design, positioning, extension and innovation more than the emblem. And now the mascot faces children who are "post-00s" or even "post-10s", who grew up in the Internet era and have higher requirements for the innovative thinking and expression of mascots.

Chang Yu, director of the Information and Propaganda Department of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee, said that a large number of revisions need to be carried out according to the selected direction.

Zheng Yuanjie, a famous modern children's writer who participated in the judging of the mascot of the 2008 Olympic Games, said that mascots should have Chinese elements and be liked by children. Zhang Yiwu, a professor at the Department of Chinese of Peking University, was very shocked to see so many applied works, "This is the high sense of identification of more than 5,000 people for our Winter Olympic games and winter Paralympic Games." ”

Alex Georgia Coplos, dean of the Art and Design Institute in Lausanne, Switzerland, says he was impressed by the diversity of works he saw both from small children and professional institutions. Silmara Murtini, former Chartered Distribution and Retail Director of the Rio Organising Committee, said it was important to shed light on the story behind the mascot.

The ice piers are gradually uncovered

During the mascot judging process, the creative works of the rock sugar gourd were shortlisted in the top ten, which was the original creative source of the mascot ice pier of the Beijing Winter Olympics. This work comes from the design team of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.

On October 10, 2018, the propaganda team of the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee came to the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts to give a speech. Although it was close to the deadline for the collection at that time, Xie Changjing, secretary of the Party Committee of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, immediately said that the whole school should do a good job in the collection of designs. They set up a mascot design team for the first time, and at the same time made it clear that the creation and signature of the work would be carried out in the form of collective creation.

After the preliminary evaluation and re-evaluation, on January 20, 2019, the office meeting of the chairman of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee pointed out that the deepening and modification of the mascot design plan should highlight the elements of the Winter Olympics and Chinese elements, and the shape should be vivid and cute, creative and recognized by most people. The meeting selected 10 groups of mascots into the design scheme category, and the study determined the category of deepening modification. Among them, the rock sugar gourd scheme is among them.

On January 25, the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee selected 10 mascot design modification experts to formally establish a mascot design modification expert group to provide guidance and suggestions for each group of design teams.

On the same day, the Organizing Committee of the Winter Olympics officially issued an invitation to the design team of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, asking the team to revise its shortlisted works.

After a short period of happiness, the design team ushered in a long and high-pressure revision process of up to 7 months. From the initial sugar gourd to the final ice pier, they have made countless large and small modifications, tens of thousands of sketches, and related documents have accumulated more than 100G.

According to the requirements of the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee, the design team of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts needs to submit the first round of revision plans around this work on the ninth day of the new year, which means that their Spring Festival holiday is "in vain". But everyone did not complain, at 8:30 a.m. on the third day of the first month of the first month, all members appeared on time in the 705 studio of the comprehensive design building of guangmei Changgang Campus. This studio also became the main front of the design team for the next 7 months.

The idea of the sugar gourd was created by Liu Pingyun, an associate professor at the School of Visual Arts and Design of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, who said that the sugar gourd was his childhood memory of Beijing, and that the "ice shell" of the sugar gourd's appearance was also "more or less related" to the ice and snow movement.

The design team handed over a second revision the day before the Lantern Festival. After a short but long 10 days of waiting, the new revision is to preserve the creativity of the ice shell and try to expand the design around other rare or characteristic animals. The Guangmei design team has made many attempts in the ice shell, including deer, tigers, rabbits, and considering that the Winter Olympics are in the Spring Festival, they have also designed lanterns, dumplings and so on.

Due to the need for confidentiality, each time a modification plan is submitted, team members are required to travel from Guangzhou "Human Flesh Express" to the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee, and some members travel to and from Beijing nearly 20 times, sometimes in order to improve efficiency, they also have to go back and forth on the same day. Cao Xue, head of the Guangmei design team and dean of the School of Visual Arts and Design, said with a smile that the number of times he has come to Beijing in the past 7 months has exceeded the number of times he has come to Beijing in the entire first half of his life, "I originally hated flying the most, but now I am used to it, but teacher Lin (Of the Winter Olympics Organizing Committee) does not call me for a few days, I feel bad." ”

Cao Xue said that The teacher Lin is Lin Cunzhen, the designer of the Emblem of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games "Winter Dream" and the Emblem of the Winter Paralympic Games "Leap", and now she has been transferred from the Central Academy of Fine Arts to the Organizing Committee of the Winter Olympic Games as a senior expert of the Ministry of Cultural Activities.

In March, the revision expert group suggested that animal characteristics be more prominent, further reflect the characteristics of Chinese culture, and put forward the proposal that the mascot design scheme should be integrated into the Internet, new technologies, fashion culture and other elements, and clarified the deepening and modification direction of cartoon animals, anthropomorphism, science and technology, and three-dimensionalization.

Throughout March and April, the Guangmei design team repeatedly revised the concept expression of the mascot image, character modeling, action proportions, decorative patterns, facial details, explanatory copywriting and design elements.

After countless explorations, the focus of their revision finally became clear - the panda wrapped in an ice shell.

Jiang Xiaoyu, chairman of the jury, explained that choosing animals as mascots is a common practice in the Winter Olympics, but choosing pandas that have served as mascots in various large-scale events is equivalent to giving themselves a problem. "Choosing a panda does have a surprising feeling, but it makes sense to think about it."

"You design the panda differently and match it to the Winter Olympics." Jiang Xiaoyu said, "Although it is a difficult problem, as long as we have innovation, we will have a unique charm." Because the panda is our national treasure, it is a unique and rare animal in China. When the international community sees the panda, it knows that it represents China, and it will be recognized without any verbal interpretation. ”

From the perspective of design insiders, making pandas is a double-edged sword, because there are too many pandas, how to make a panda that is easy to spread, cute and non-traditional?

To this end, the Guangmei design team has set up a special data group to collect all the pandas that can be collected, and to compare and analyze them every day, whether it is in the Office of the Winter Olympics Organizing Committee or the Guangmei Workshop, all of which are plastered with various pandas.

Since the idea of the ice shell has been preserved, the design team found that this panda with a transparent ice shell has not been done by anyone before. But I still feel that the ice shell panda is not connected enough with the Winter Olympics.

"It was a very difficult period, I always felt that this mascot was less than something, although it had an ice crystal shell, which was directly related to ice, but how could it be closely related to the Winter Olympics, how could it be said that it was the mascot of the Winter Olympics, not the mascot of other activities?" Lin Cunzhen pointed out the difficulties encountered at that time.

Due to the delay in breaking through, everyone even doubted whether this plan was feasible. For the sake of the mascot, the team members did not stay up late, lived in torment, and did not complain less. But once it is rare to wait for the news after the delivery of the "comfortable" time, and extremely expect to stay up late, in the words of Cao Xue: "We can still stay up to show that we still have hope, if we don't let us stay up, it also means that we have no play, so it is healthier to stay up." ”

Sure enough, inspiration creeps in with this wait and anticipation. On April 30, the Guangmei design team once again entered the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee. "That day, everyone was discussing together, and suddenly there was an idea that we could melt the 'ice ribbon' into it?" Lin Cunzhen said that this "wakes up" everyone, when the colorful halo symbolizing the ice and snow sports track appears on the panda's face, the mascot wearing an ice shell looks exactly like an astronaut, and it has a sense of futurism, a sense of science and technology, and an "ice ribbon", and an ice crystal shell, and it is a National Treasure of China, an animal loved by people around the world, so that the positioning is very clear immediately.

Focusing on the sense of speed brought by the ice crystal shell and flowing lines, the design team added the 5G concept representing the Internet era, and built the colorful aura of the panda's head decoration into an energy ring that can be empowered, making the image of the "aerospace panda" more full and rich.

"(After adding the 'ice ribbon') the effect is particularly dazzling, completely different from before, so it was a big breakthrough, 'Aerospace Panda' put aside all the previous (panda) content and features." At that time, we felt like it was going to be dawn! Liu Pingyun said excitedly.

After breaking through the bottleneck, the team made small detail modifications in a more precise direction. In the palm of the panda, in order to express the idea of love and peace, they drew a heart-shaped pattern. In addition, drawing on the inspiration of the bobsleigh graphics in the works of the top ten primary and secondary school students, behind the panda, the black pattern connecting the two arms forms a figure of a snowboard.

In May, the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee held a chairman's office meeting to listen to the mascot modification plan, social comments, and the opinions of the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee. The meeting study identified 4 groups of candidates.

At the beginning of July 2019, the Guangmei team received further instructions to make trade-offs and emphasis on the previous three parallel mascot designs, focusing on the modification and improvement of the ice shell panda.

The Guangmei team communicates with the Organizing Committee of the Winter Olympics, in addition to going to Beijing for meetings, more on the phone or online, but because of confidentiality, the two sides can only use "secret codes" to communicate when communicating non-face-to-face, such as not mentioning the word "panda", and even "black circles" can not be said.

As the plan for the ice-shelled panda was gradually improved, the name was also put on the agenda. The Organizing Committee of the Winter Olympics mobilized extensively, with the help of many "external brains". Someone may not see the mascot and tell them a few anchors.

"At that time, foreigners and children helped us to name us, as well as literary authors, artists, etc., we received hundreds of names, and it was actually a difficult job to choose a name suitable for the mascot of the Winter Olympics and paralympics among these hundreds of names." Lin Cunzhen said that in order to make Chinese and foreigners read smoothly and understandably, the concept should be better, and more importantly, it should be able to pass the trademark check.

At the time of the 2008 Olympics, the mascot's name was not required to be registered. But now the IOC has specifically proposed that names also need to be registered. When naming the name, the two-word name was abandoned, because it was difficult to check the re-pass. At that time, three or four word names were spoken.

The original idea for the ice shell panda came from the rock sugar gourd, "In fact, the ice sugar gourd was originally also called sugar dun'er, and 'dun'er' is a particularly interesting word. There is a characteristic of northern winter, but also very kind, like the neighbor's child is particularly healthy, lively and cute. Lin Cunzhen said, "As soon as I have this idea, I immediately went to the Internet to check it, and the results were not repeated." Later, it was found that it was difficult for southerners and foreigners to pronounce 'pier', so we later changed it to an ice pier and checked it. ”

Snow melts into perfection

Unlike the ice piers, the lantern shape of the Winter Paralympic mascot snow melts has a clearer idea at the beginning. This stems from Jiang Yufan, an undergraduate student majoring in product design at the School of Design of Jilin University of Art, who has an impression of his hometown NianWeier.

The little girl's home is in Jiayin County, Yichun City, Heilongjiang Province, located deep in the Xiaoxing'an Mountains, and every New Year, this small county town is wrapped in a strong festive atmosphere, and red lanterns hang high between the streets and buildings, which is the most common scene. "At the beginning, like most of my classmates, I designed the image of the elk, but three days before the deadline, Teacher Feng Yanpan (of Product Design) found that most of the works submitted by my classmates were mainly elk, so I temporarily changed the plan, redesigned it, and finally came up with the idea of Chinese knots and red lanterns." Jiang Yufan said, "These two images are particularly representative of traditional Chinese culture and convey the meaning of festivity. ”

At the time of the judging, the ideas of the Chinese knot and the red lantern were shortlisted for the top ten and were determined to continue to deepen the revision. When he learned that the school had works in the top ten, Guo Chunfang, president of Jilin Art College, was very emotional. After the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee came to the school on September 21, 2018 to preach, he quickly organized the design work, and now, the efforts have been rewarded, and he is very pleased. But the opinion given by experts is to "retain only the original attributes and redesign the image". This means that in addition to retaining the character attribute of "lantern", the overall image design must start from scratch.

Also out of a need for confidentiality, the design team used a Jiyi expert apartment in the residential area behind the school campus as a studio, a 100-square-meter apartment that witnessed the whole process of the birth of the Winter Paralympic mascot.

Wu Yibo, director of the Department of Visual Communication at the School of Design of Jilin University of Art, said that in the preliminary revision stage, she had to come to the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee every week to submit the revision plan, and in the more than 7 months of "deep processing" of the plan, she traveled from Changchun to Beijing more than 30 times, and the "two points and one line" from the capital airport to Shougang became her deepest impression of Beijing.

The task faced by the Jiyi design team is not only to add diverse attributes to the lantern image, to anthropomorphize it, to give it life, but also to combine it with the Olympic Games, which requires multi-faceted learning. Therefore, Jin Wei, deputy dean of teaching at the School of Design of Jilin Art College, specially bought a lantern to hang in the studio, allowing the team members to observe and ponder every day. At the same time, all the team members watched the video of the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee over and over again, and also inquired on the Internet, "badly supplemented" the Olympic Games and related knowledge, and felt and looked for the integration point of Olympic culture and Chinese culture. "It's a valuable experience for us." Jin Wei said.

In late February, after discussion and study, the expert group of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee decided to cancel the further modification of the Chinese knot and let the team focus on the improvement of the lantern image. By the beginning of April, the image of the lantern had been basically determined, and the Jiyi design team needed to submit a complete cultural interpretation plan.

"This stage is also the most confused and tormenting stage of the team." Guo Chunfang said, "At the beginning, the attributes of the mascot were combined with the deer, we tried to add antlers and red noses, but on the one hand, the image should be beautiful, on the other hand, we must also consider cultural interpretation, about 1 month, we have made various attempts, I feel that the road is not going to work."

The design team is torn between constant experimentation and self-denial every day, and it was during this glue phase that the revision team felt the team's confusion and gave guidance and help in a timely manner. Under the repeated communication and attempts of the two sides, the deer's attributes were abandoned, and elements such as the Temple of Heaven, the pigeons, the Great Wall, and the Ruyi connected with the Winter Olympics (also known as "Snow Ruyi") that embodied the "City of the Two Olympics" appeared in the image of the mascot.

The design will have a moment of inspiration, but more is repeatedly revised and improved. Snow cubes on the face of the snow contoured its face, in order to achieve the most realistic effect, the design team in the winter specially threw a lot of snow piles on the wall, and then visualized the shape on the wall; and in order to show the red face of the snow melting, the corner of the mouth, the team also made a lot of fine-tuning.

On June 15, the Jiyi design team received a new task from the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee to make models, and in order to ensure that nothing goes wrong, the team decided to complete the model production themselves. As a result, the studio of more than 100 square meters has become a temporary model processing plant, the 3 square meters balcony has been converted into a painting room, and the team members have begun to learn new skills, respectively, modeling, shell extraction, 3D printing, sanding, painting and other work, everyone is multi-tasking.

In the following July and August, under the guidance of the expert group of the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee, the team completed many tasks such as memes, sports forms, and landscape application design for the Winter Olympics. "The team took into account the later application when modifying, and increased the malleability of the application as much as possible, such as the display effect on both sides of the road and billboards, as well as the effect of derivatives, such as table lamps, watches, etc., all of which are in our consideration." Wu Yibo said, "The lantern itself can emit light, can bring warmth and transmit power, which is very much in line with the concept of the Winter Paralympic Games." ”

Jiao Qiang, deputy dean of the Animation College of Jilin Art College, was nicknamed Doraemon by the team members, although the appearance is thick and rough, but the brushstrokes are very delicate, and he can always quickly sketch out sketches for everyone to discuss.

The strong child was left unattended, and he took his daughter to the project team for winter and summer vacations. Lin Cunzhen recalled: "Once I saw Xue Rongrong holding the meme design of the snowman, which was very cute, and later learned that it was made by Teacher Dajiao (Jiaoqiang), which contrasted with his own image, and Teacher Dajiao said that when creating this, he thought of his own daughter. ”

When naming this work, taking into account the confrontation with the ice pier, the word "snow" was used to "ice", which means "Ruixue Mega Year", and the lantern gave people a warm and melting feeling, in order to reflect tolerance and communication, the words "Rong" and "Rong" were used.

Perseverance will eventually see the blossoms

At the same time as the intense revision, on April 12, 2019, the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee invited representatives and CPPCC members from the national and Beijing Municipal and Hebei Provincial People's Congresses, representatives of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, the All-China Women's Federation, the China Disabled Persons' Federation, as well as athletes, college, middle and primary school students and related enterprises and other representatives of all sectors of society to review the design plan. Representatives from all walks of life gave a positive evaluation of the design plan and put forward suggestions for modification. The revision expert group carefully sorted out and studied these suggestions, organized centralized discussions and centralized modifications of the mascot design plan for many times, and solicited the opinions of the members of the expert review committee respectively.

In the process of deepening the design and modification of the mascot, the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee has repeatedly solicited the opinions of the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee. The International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee fully affirmed the design plan from the perspectives of media communication, market development and image landscape, and believed that it reflected a high level of design.

On July 10, the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee went to Beijing Chongwen Primary School to conduct a survey on the love of primary school students' "Winter Olympic Mascot in My Heart". Under the condition of strict confidentiality discipline, Beijing Chongwen Primary School organized grades 1 to 5, and about 300 students participated in the voting activities. At that time, three requirements were made for the children: it must be something you like, that represents China, and that is festive.

The mascot that was finalized received the highest number of votes. In fact, as early as before the review work, the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee also conducted an online poll on the image, quantity, symbolism, personality, color and other elements of the mascot.

In the survey at that time, nearly 10,000 effectively recovered samples selected the highest proportion of animal images, accounting for 54.6%. In the survey of the number of mascots, the Beijing Winter Olympic mascot and the Winter Paralympic mascot each selected one of the data the highest, accounting for 47%. In the survey of mascot colors, the data on the choice of traditional Chinese colors was the highest, accounting for 53.3%. In the survey of mascot personality, the data proportion of choosing a lively and cheerful personality was the highest, accounting for 54.3%. In the mascot symbolic survey, the proportion of data that chose the symbols of teamwork, strength, agility, and agility was relatively high. These are all reflected in the final mascot.

Han Zirong said that the collective presentation of the mascot draws on the opinions of all sectors of society, as well as the tendentious opinions of the Internet and netizens.

She especially thanked the children for their active participation in the mascot collection. "Among the last 10 selected works, there are works by elementary school students, which especially reflect the novel creativity of primary school students. The two mascots presented at the end reflect some elements and also draw on the children's good opinions and suggestions. Through painting mascots, the children learned about the Winter Olympic Games, the relevant knowledge of the Beijing Winter Olympic games and the Winter Paralympic Games, and the Olympic spirit, which also stimulated their patriotic enthusiasm and inspired their spirit of striving for the 'Chinese Dream', which is of extraordinary significance. ”

In terms of the re-examination of mascot trademarks, in early June and early July 2019, the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee entrusted the Trademark Office of the State Administration for Market Regulation and the State Intellectual Property Office to check the candidate scheme and the mascot name respectively. According to the feedback of the Trademark Office, judging from the results of the domestic re-examination, no highly similar trademarks were found in all 45 categories of trademark registration for the Winter Olympics mascots of the main selection plan and the alternative plan; neither the winter Paralympic mascots of the main selection plan nor the alternative schemes were searched for similar trademarks in the re-examination sample. As of now, no identical or highly similar trademarks have been found in the Chinese and English names of the main option or the alternatives.

Since late June, the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee have launched an international weight check on the two sets of mascot candidates. According to the results of the IOC's international re-examination, no highly similar trademarks were found, nor did they reflect significant legal and commercial risks.

In August, the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee reported the candidate plan for the mascot of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games Leading Group and determined the final plan. At the same time, the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee went to Lausanne, Switzerland, and Bonn, Germany, to formally submit the mascot plan for the Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games to the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee.

In the view of Jiang Xiaoyu, chairman of the jury, the ice pier uses the image of a panda that everyone is familiar with but innovative, showing the world the image of Chinese people, hardworking and kind; at the same time, it is a panda facing the future and full of scientific and technological sense, showing China's full confidence in the future. The snow rongrong is traditional Chinese culture through anthropomorphic art treatment, with ice and snow embellishment design, the 2022 Winter Olympics is the Spring Festival, it represents China's festivities, the cultural characteristics of the Spring Festival; at the same time, it can shine, implying to light up the fire of hope in the heart, illuminate the road of dreams.

On the eve of the official release of the mascot, in the 5th floor office of the Joint PumpIng Station of the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee, Xie Changjing, secretary of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, and the design team were officially confirmed by the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee, and the plan they submitted was selected as the mascot of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games.

At the moment of the announcement, the members of the design team all shed tears. Xie Changjing said: "We represent a special contribution made by the south to our Beijing Winter Olympics. Ice and snow are rare in the south, and he is more eager to yearn for ice and snow sports. We are an independent art school in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and now that we have achieved such results, we have played a great role in motivating us to lead the development of art design in the Greater Bay Area. ”

Looking back on this full period of time, Cao Xue said with emotion: "This moment, just like a movie, in an instant, all the unpleasant feelings poured into my eyes." ”

Teacher Liu Pingyun has lost more than a dozen pounds since the beginning of 2019 for this fat mascot, and even the long hair that was originally tied with a ponytail has been shaved into a bald head and a beard. "We've done mascot designs like this before, and generally it's done in a week or a month." This statement now seems to be a full journey, constantly pressurizing, constantly pushing, constantly modifying, and indeed making our whole body and mind very challenging. ”

Similarly, the design team led by Guo Chunfang, president of the Jilin Academy of Arts, was told that when Xue Rongrong was identified as the mascot of the Beijing Winter Paralympic Games, Guo Chunfang and his team members shed tears of excitement. "Going through so many processes and going through the ups and downs of the program is an unforgettable experience for our team." Guo Chunfang said, "The people of Jilin love ice and snow sports and look forward to the successful holding of the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in China. ”

Jiang Yufan, the original creative proposer, said: "This experience will be very important for my future growth. ”

Jin Wei, deputy dean of teaching at the School of Design of Jilin Art College, sighed: "In the process of creation, sometimes I really feel that the mountains and rivers are exhausted, and it is the leaders and expert teachers who encourage us again and again, and we persist to the end. ”

Perhaps by coincidence, the two schemes that won in the end were the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in the south and the Jilin Academy of Arts in the north. Gao Tian, deputy director of the Cultural Activities Department of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee, said that there is also inevitability in this kind of accident. "This reflects the enthusiasm and concern of the people of the whole country for the Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, and also reflects that ice and snow sports are not only deeply loved in the northern region, but also the people in the south are also full of expectations and enthusiasm." It is more fully illustrated that through the holding of the Winter Olympic Games and the Winter Paralympic Games, ice and snow sports and ice and snow culture are being promoted and developed throughout the country. ”

Jiang Xiaoyu said: "The ice pier of the Winter Olympic Mascot and the mascot of the Winter Paralympic Games are a very perfect combination and combination, another perfect combination of Chinese culture and olympic spirit, and a precious gift from the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee and the Chinese people to the Olympic Movement and the world, condensing the crystallization of collective wisdom." ”

With the mascot officially unveiled, people are most concerned about when they can buy mascots. It is reported that for confidentiality reasons, on the day of the release on September 17, the mascot licensed products could not be listed. On the two new days of the concession in October and November (the first Saturday of each month, October 5 and November 2), a number of mascot licensed products with new ideas, new materials and particularly interesting images will be launched one after another.

According to Park Xuedong, director of the Market Development Department of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee, as a judge of this mascot collection, he has always been very concerned about how to transform exquisite design drawings into exquisite mascot licensed goods. The ice shell of the ice pier and the glow of the snow melting all provide unlimited possibilities for the licensed goods, and the related licensed goods will be "innovative and warm", "Wait until you see our mascot licensed goods, I believe you will be bright!" ”
