China Times (www.chinatimes.net.cn) reporter Zhou Nan wang Xiaohui reported in Beijing

What is disability?

Before the age of 10, Zhang Jiutong never thought about this problem. He knew he wasn't in good health, he was running slower than others, and he thought he was just sick and would get better sooner or later. But he didn't understand why he could only be a goalkeeper in football class, and the teacher always had to guard a goal with him, why he could only shoot the ball off the field in basketball class. It wasn't until the day Zhang Jiutong cried and asked his mother, "Why can't I play like other classmates?", that he understood what disability was for him in his mother's tearful explanation.

Today, Zhang Jiutong is 33 years old, received a doctorate, completed postdoctoral research at Tsinghua University, has a happy family, and is currently a political science teacher at Nanjing Special Education Normal College (hereinafter referred to as "Nanjing Special Teacher"). At the same time, he is also the youngest associate professor of the school and the vice president of the Institute of Special Education, and a director of the China Association for the Development of the Cause of The Disabled. Last year, he was elected as the party representative of Jiangsu Province in Nanjing University and a member of the CPPCC Committee of Nanjing Qixia District.

Today's Zhang Jiutong has a very deep understanding of "disability", he told the "China Times" reporter: "Disability is connected with social practice and specific culture, divided into absolute disability and relative disability. Absolute disability is a constant factor that determines the limitations of a person with disabilities in some practical activities, while relative disability determines the potential of a person with disabilities. The work of the disabled is the process of continuously reducing the absolute disability and tapping into the potential of the disabled. As a college teacher, my mission is to cultivate special teachers in the spirit of fraternity and soul shaping, cultivate management talents for the cause of the disabled, and serve the cause of higher integrated education for the disabled. ”

Growing up: First look at the universality of people with disabilities as human beings

"If the able-bodied person is compared to the sun, then the disabled are the moon. The reason why the moon is as bright as silver is because of the sun's illumination. The sun is always round, but the moon has to experience the alternation of circles. However, there is no difference between the dreams of the sun and the moon, both are round. Zhang Jiutong's words lit up the hearts of many people, and he is the "messenger of the moon".

Zhang Jiutong's disability has a long history. Zhang Jiutong was born on October 24, 1988 in Binzhou, Shandong Province, and the sequelae of cerebral palsy caused by dystocia made him 5 years old before he could walk crookedly and alone. Zhang Jiutong's way forward in life is full of obstacles due to physical disabilities, and the process of understanding disabilities is also arduous and long, but Zhang Jiutong did not say too much. He told reporters with a smile that his family had fully cultivated his personality and will long before he did not know what a disability was.

Grandpa was an experienced veteran who often told him revolutionary stories, and the red seeds had long been buried in his young heart. At the age of 11, Zhang Jiutong began to read the government work report and the party congress report, and took the initiative to write down his feelings. It is precisely because he is full of interest and affection for political and national events that he did not hesitate to choose Marxist theory when choosing a major in college. The party's teachings gave him an optimistic attitude towards life to overcome difficulties, and he has benefited so far.

His father was a political work cadre, and guiding Zhang Jiutong was also "very well-established". When he was young, he often told him the stories of Haidi Zhang and Helen Keller. Zhang Jiutong likes sports, his father taught him to play basketball, at first he could only shoot one or two at a time, and later in order to complete the goal of 30 fixed-point shots outside the three-second zone, 9-year-old Zhang Jiutong shot from 6 pm to 9:30 pm, and finally became the class fixed point shooting champion. Zhang Jiutong loves to write, his father gave him counseling and support, in the year of high school graduation, Zhang Jiutong published a 460,000-word "Nine Children's Composition", which recorded the mental journey of a disabled child stumbling and growing up and exploring, and was the first personal composition collection of disabled high school students in China. In 2007, Zhang Jiutong enrolled in Binzhou College, Dream University. Then, he sprinted for his dream and was admitted to the Marxist College of Shandong Normal University for master's and doctoral studies.

Reading changes fate, and Zhang Jiutong knows that education is more fundamental to the change of the fate of the disabled. After graduating with a ph.D. in 2016, Zhang Jiutong chose to become a political science teacher in Nanjing. He hopes to use what he has learned all his life to contribute to the education of more disabled people. At this point, Zhang Jiutong began a new transformation from a beneficiary of integrated education to a participant and devotee of integrated education. In fact, Zhang Jiutong's lover is also a practitioner of grassroots special education schools. Zhang Jiutong told reporters with a smile that his family is also a family with integrated disabilities and health, and they all hope to contribute to special education and the cause of the disabled.

The pen has not stopped working, and the struggle has not stopped. Since his studies, Zhang Jiutong has presided over and participated in 17 national, provincial and ministerial projects, published nearly 70 articles in authoritative journals such as Guangming Daily (Theoretical Edition), CSSCI, SCI and various journals, published monographs and co-authored 6 books, and the papers were reprinted in full by "Learning to Strengthen the Country" and "Copy Materials of People's Congress Newspapers and Periodicals". He has won more than 90 honorary awards such as outstanding communist party members of colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province, advanced individuals in the education system of Jiangsu Province, outstanding doctoral dissertations at the provincial level, and "Moving Nanjing" Annual Person. He has given more than 80 academic reports and lectures at Peking University and Tsinghua University.

Counting his past, Zhang Jiutong told reporters that his achievements are closely related to his parents' patience, social care and personal struggle, and the key core lies in the road to growth, as a disabled person, how he is treated, how he looks at himself. From this perspective, it is of great significance to establish a new view of the disabled, fundamentally reversing the way society looks at the disabled, "When we look at the disabled, we first see that he is a person." ”

Dreaming: "Don't give up"

"I have a dream of the moon, praying that every disabled child can have a full family, praying that every disabled friend can have a valuable life, and praying that our society is full of sunshine." When he said this, Zhang Jiutong was very excited. The three-foot podium of the Nanjing Special Division is the focus of Zhang Jiutong's pursuit of his dreams.

Nanjing special teacher is the cradle of China's special teacher training, higher integrated education is a major feature, the ratio of healthy students to disabled students in the school is 9:1. In life, in view of the particularity of his dual identity as a teacher and a disabled person, Zhang Jiutong has become a bridge for the communication and integration of healthy students and disabled students.

In terms of learning, Zhang Jiutong is committed to bringing students a "sense of political gain" through creative teaching. The theory and philosophical nature of the political science principles he taught are very strong, but the rational thinking ability of deaf students is obviously insufficient, and many questions will arise when facing concepts such as "superstructure" and "economic foundation", "Architecture is a house, what is the relationship with the political legal system and ideological concepts?" "Why are material relations of production called foundations?" How can the foundation be a material production relation? In the face of the confusion of deaf students, Zhang Jiutong helped them understand through the metaphor of the image: "If you think of the whole country as a building, then what determines the nature of the state is the foundation, politically it is the material production relations, and then look at who owns the means of production, whether it belongs to the minority or the majority, this is the difference between private ownership and public ownership." ”

Zhang Jiutong's political science courses are deeply loved by students, and many students take the initiative to propose to the leaders of the college that "political classes must not change teachers", and the students' evaluation of teaching has ranked first many times. "They didn't have any comments or objections because I was a teacher with a disability, they enjoyed my class very much, and the recognition of the students was my greatest honor and my highest reward as a teacher."

The reporter learned that as a student's dream tutor, Zhang Jiutong has also conducted psychological counseling for more than 100 students, received more than 2,000 voluntary consultations, carried out more than 60 public welfare lectures and reports, and as a core member of the curriculum ideological project declared by the provincial demonstration course and provincial demonstration major, he was also invited to serve as a 985 college curriculum ideological guidance expert.

Zhang Jiutong carved the spirit of "fraternity and love to shape the soul" into the bones and blood, hidden in the heart, and practiced the body, and he strengthened the students' confidence and belief in serving the cause of special education and the disabled through teaching and practicing. He said bluntly that integrated education is the "dream of the moon" for which he will strive for a lifetime.

At the end of the interview, Zhang Jiutong solemnly said word by word: "I would like to tell all disabled friends, no matter what setbacks and difficulties you encounter, please do not give up." ”
