Relay has always been the most important sport for the Chinese short track team. Since 1998, the Chinese men's team has reached the men's 5,000-meter relay final at every Winter Olympics and won 1 silver and 3 bronze. Four years ago, the Chinese team lost to the Hungarian team led by the "Liu Brothers" in the final by a gap of 0.064 seconds, passing by the champions.

However, this season's Performance of the Chinese team in this event was not satisfactory, and only won one runner-up, ranking fourth in the World Cup. In this semi-final, China is in the same group as the world's second-ranked Canadian team, and the remaining two opponents are the fifth-ranked Italian team and the eighth-ranked Japanese team.

After the game began, the Chinese team followed the Canadian team for a while. For most of the ensuing fixtures, the Chinese and Canadian teams alternately led the way. With nine laps left, China's Li Wenlong fell heavily while receiving the baton, slid off the track and hit the baffle. The Chinese team still insisted on sliding the full course, and the last one reached the finish line. After video review, the referee ruled that the Chinese team was unintentionally interfered with by the Canadian players, and advanced to the final of Group A together with the top two Canadian teams and Italy teams in the group.
