Johog finished in 28:06.3, and she narrowly defeated Niskanen by a narrow margin of 0.4 seconds, while Krista Palmakowski, also from Finland, won the bronze medal with a time of 28:37.8.

A total of 98 athletes participated in the competition, one departing every 30 seconds. At first, Niskanen pressed against Hauge, taking a 10.1-second lead at one point at the 6.8 km time point. However, the Norwegian then began to exert force, quickly smoothing out the gap and then hitting the line first.

Since the women's 10 km of cross-country skiing was re-included in the official Winter Olympics in 2002, Norway has won at least one medal in the event at six consecutive Winter Olympics.
