The world's largest cut diamond , Enigma , changed hands for £3.16 million at an auction in London on 9 February.

The Enigma, the world's largest known cut diamond weighing 555.55 carats, changed hands at an auction in London for £3.16 million (27176316 yuan). The origins of this rare black diamond can be traced back more than 2.6 billion years.

Black diamonds, also known as carbonado, are commonly found near the Earth's surface, suggesting that they may have come from beyond Earth and are believed to have formed more than 2.6 billion years ago when a meteorite or asteroid hit Earth.

Sotheby's in London auctioned the diamond online, bidding for the diamond, which began at 6 a.m. PST on Feb. 3 and ended on Feb. 9, adding that it would accept cryptocurrencies to pay for the diamond.

It took experts three years to process it into a 55-facet gem. The black diamond's anonymous holders have never publicly displayed the diamond in the past 20 years, and it has recently been exhibited in Dubai, Los Angeles and London.

Tobias Kormind, general manager of Mayfair, Europe's largest online jeweler, said the price of the hammer of the black diamond "enigma" did not reach the estimated value, but the size, shape and origin of the "enigma" made it groundbreaking and amazing.
