The National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) recorded more than 86,600 positive COVID-19 test reports between Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning. The Institute reported this following an additional audit of its data. Earlier, RIVM reported 144,586 new cases, but that number proved incorrect and was quickly withdrawn.

The corrected figures are similar to the revised data for the past week. According to information released tuesday by RIVM, an average of 86,933 people tested positive every day between Feb. 2 and 8.

Tens of thousands of confirmed infected people may have been counted twice in earlier reports, making the numbers reported for the first one too high. This may be because RIVM is using a new method of collecting data. Positive results from covid-19 tests are now handed directly to RIVM, rather than being filtered through several systems of GGD organization first. This should prevent the system from collapsing in the future, leading to a recurrence of the recent backlog of reports. On Tuesday, RIVM recorded more than 300,000 positive results, and the backlog of these tests dates back to Jan. 17.

Tuesday's high number was initially revised from 394,759 to 336,692, but has now been corrected to 394,674. In the past seven days, 844,766 positive tests were registered, including a backlog of reports over three weeks, averaging 120,681 per day. In the new calculation, this number remains roughly unchanged.

In the past week, RIVM registered 51 cases of deaths due to COVID-19, an average of about 7 per day. This is the lowest level since October 22. That includes seven deaths registered Wednesday. It contains residents of Amsterdam, The Hague, Groningen, Haarlem, Breda, Dijk en Waard and the Twente area.

However, the actual death toll is likely to be higher, as deaths from COVID-19 are not mandatory to be reported to RIVM, so the data available to the institute in this regard is very limited.
