Ding Naizhu first met Lai Shengchuan 37 years ago. Lai Shengchuan, a sophomore, sat on the ground with a guitar and greeted her shyly in the sun, looking weak, restrained, and unsophisticated.
Lai Shengchuan was singing in a café called "Adia" on Zhongxiao East Road, at least two or three days a week, and the same stage with him were Hu Yinmeng, Hu Defu, Cai Qin, Luo Dayou, and Li Zongsheng, who were still Lai Shengchuan's listeners. Not only singing, he was also busy painting, editing periodicals, writing novels and poems, and was an authentic literary and artistic youth.
After graduating from college, Ding Naizhu married Lai Shengchuan, who was one year younger than himself, and has been playing the most needed and important role in Lai Shengchuan's life ever since. She is Lai Shengchuan's lover, a faithful work assistant, and a companion in tantric practice.

Soon after their marriage, the two studied together at the University of Berkeley, Lai Shengchuan studied for a doctorate in drama, and Ding Naizhu studied for a master's degree in education administration. Until 1983, Lai Shengchuan returned to Taiwan at the invitation of Mr. Yao Yiwei, a veteran taiwanese dramatist.

Lai Shengchuan felt that it was a golden age of Taiwanese drama and an era of idealism in which literature and art were gradually awakening.
Many people are housewives, warehouse managers, administrators, and TV company brothers during the day; as soon as the work is over, they begin to write film reviews in "Impact Magazine", audition of art films in Ximending, and rehearsals of plays in "bringing their own dry food".
Lanling Opera Workshop was born in such an environment, and the leader is Jin Shijie, a well-known actor who is still active on the theatrical stage. Jin Shijie graduated from Pingtung Agricultural College, raised pigs in the countryside for more than a year, could not suppress his inner artistic pursuit and chose to go north, after the writer Zhang Xiaofeng's Christian art troupe performed several plays, he took over the Gengxin Experimental Theater Troupe from Zhou Yu, which was the predecessor of Lanling Opera Workshop.
The troupe is very poor, the actors have their own costumes, the lights are mahjong lights carried from home, all the posters are done by themselves, and even the audience is calling relatives and friends to "urge tickets", bringing their own folding chairs.
Lai Shengchuan, shortly after the founding of the Lanling Theater Troupe, returned to Taiwan from the United States and became one of the earliest pioneers of taiwan's modern theater.

In 1983, at the age of 29, Lai Shengchuan returned to Taiwan from the University of Berkeley to teach.
There are no teaching materials in the school, Lai Shengchuan desperately translates the script, from Greek tragedy to Molière and Racine; there is no "lesson from the past" in acting training, Lai Shengchuan integrates what he has learned and experiments with students. Lai Shengchuan said, "Nothing means that anything is possible."
Through Du Kefeng, Lai Shengchuan met Jin Shijie, Liu Jingmin and a group of other people from lanling opera workshop.
Lai Shengchuan, of course, was not smooth sailing. In addition to his father's early death at the age of 14, in the professional field, he has both planted a heel and various doubts and controversies. The copyright problem of "That Night, We Say Crosstalk" was caught in the "malpractice" storm due to the director's Taiwanese "Centennial Celebration" and so on.
The first time he planted his heel was in a movie called "Flying Man Ada".
Lai Shengchuan directed "Crush on Peach Blossom Garden" into a movie, starring Lin Qingxia, which was a great success. Released in 1994, Ada was his second film, a box-office fiasco that was a serious setback in his life.
In the two years of 1994 and 1995, Lai Shengchuan said that he suffered a serious midlife crisis, so serious that he did not want to do theater or make movies, and almost suffered from depression. "I have a psychologist friend who said: The biggest feature of a midlife crisis is that no matter how successful a person has been in the past, he feels completely meaningless. That's how I was. ”
"We're All Human" began airing in October 1995 and ran live until 1998, setting a record for 600 consecutive episodes. The theme song was arranged by Luo Dayou, who had listened to Lai Shengchuan sing at "Aditya".
This continuous improvisation was extremely stressful, but by switching tracks, Lai Shengchuan spent the most painful period of his life. He recalled afterwards that if he hadn't gone to film television at the time, he might have retired a long time ago.

More than 30 years have passed since returning to Taiwan in 1983, and Lai Shengchuan, who is now in his 60s and has white hair, has finally made it common for people to say the word "upper theater" as "lower theater". He himself has gone from being a pioneer of taiwan's modern theater to becoming a leading figure in today's Chinese theater circle.
