Jamie North is an Australian artist whose main work is to expand sculpture into the discussion between nature and man-made. Inspired by a sense of place, North extended his observations to plant intelligence, nurturing a system in which selected native plants were able to regenerate and reproduce, embedded in architectural works built from waste or byproducts of man-made industry.

He used concrete and other materials that were in a state of erosion like rock as the basis for his work. The key element here is his carefully placed plants that grow from these seemingly single forms.
Interestingly, he was inspired by Karl Marx's famous quote: "Everything that is solid melts into air". Some projects talk about the relationship between nature and architecture, while others want to be associated with the idea of regeneration and how nature drives it, and we want to solve some of the environmental mistakes of the past through technology.

These eroded cement and marble columns are embedded with many plants native to Australia. Kangaroo vines, Port Jackson figs and kidney grass are wrapped around steel cables and grow from cracked stone-shaped crevices, juxtaposing industrialized man-made sculptures with organic elements. Lush greenery breathes new life into the otherwise dilapidated building, giving rise to a larger theme of regeneration.
