Two. Kitano Takeshi film style

Takeshi Kitano was first exposed to the film "Humpback City", whose spirit is mainly "violence and aesthetics". He portrays violence so heavily and depressingly, but there is a touching force running through it. Japan's environment as an island nation shaped its own unique character, and from it developed a fascination with violence. When it comes to Japan, the first thing that comes to mind is the term "cutting off one's abdomen and committing suicide," and the "sword" is one of the symbols of Japanese culture. Takeshi Kitano has a different charm, in that the violence shown to people in his films is straightforward, directly showing violence, and after the blood and wild killing, it brings people a sad atmosphere. The violence in Kitano Takeshi's films can be said to be violence that goes directly to destruction, a tragic massacre, or it can be said to be a sudden violence, the previous shot may only kill a person, and the next shot is a person's blood.

Three. About Humpback City

Like most people, I first saw the name "Humpback City" like everyone else, thinking it was a city, and then I learned that it was a swordsman's nickname. Although the movie is long, but the storyline is extremely simple, the road number is also very old-fashioned, the film tells the story of a blind swordsman (Kitano Takeshi) who calls himself a masseuse, comes to a small town, out of the heart of righteousness, helps many vulnerable groups, and later meets the sisters and brothers who are disguised as geisha to kill, learns of their grievances, decides to vent their anger for the sisters and brothers, and Humpback City starts a killing with the gang. In fact, in the shot, I can feel that violence is always sudden, and when violence occurs, people around me seem indifferent, which makes me unable to understand people's indifference, and Kitano Takeshi sees this as the violence he wants to show, "in the expression of behavior and emotion, it seems unexpectedly self-restraint and introversion." And there is also a humorous plot in it, the mentally handicapped who is constantly running around the house, which is also a representative of imagery. And then there's a lot of music interspersed in the film. The procession carrying the scarecrow, the four people who raised their hoes to beat the percussion, and then the four people provoked a tap dance on the farmland in the rain, the last grand dance, etc., which made people express not only the chivalrous charm, but also the sadness and joy of a lyrical life. When you are still immersed in violence and can't extricate yourself, these episodes make you feel that there is a sense of dilution of violence in your heart.

Humpback City movie cover

Let's talk about the details. The scarecrow in the field is a symbolic object, the first time it appears when a group of farmers pass by him holding a scarecrow samurai as they pass by him in Humpback City, and then the scarecrow stands in the field; the second time is on the way down the mountain by a geisha, and several children carry scarecrow samurai and slash it with sticks. The third time was on the way down the hill in Hutou City, stepping on the scarecrow samurai who had been thrown to the ground, he picked it up and reinserted it in the dirt. Here, the Scarecrow Samurai is the symbol of the Japanese samurai spirit that we have heard of: name, loyalty, courage, righteousness, etiquette, sincerity, gram, benevolence. Humpback City is such a samurai. Therefore, the moment Humpback City lifted up the scarecrow, it also supported the samurai spirit.

The film leaves people with two suspenseful thoughts, one is where the real belonging of Kunuma is, and the other is whether the masseuse is blind. The suspense is revealed at the end of the film after a long tap dance of the shrine construction and the tap dance of the celebration ceremony. The last scene at the end of the film is when the masseuse opens his eyes and looks into the camera, "Because of blind people, it is easier to see people's hearts." This is a city with many people helpless, but it is also an era when people are forced to live. What it really wants to reflect is the oppression and suffering endured by the Japanese people in that era, and the end of the film shows that all the oppressed and insulted people have become the masters of the world.
