The Winter Olympics Diaries | Doping Inspector: Working for Every Clean Winter Olympic Medal

In the village of the Winter Olympics, there is such a group of people. They are the first teams to arrive every day, and although they don't play, every game is related to them. They are the doping inspectors of the Winter Olympics. Their "zero tolerance" and "zero mistakes" are the bottom line to ensure the purity and cleanliness of the Winter Olympic medals. Recently, Yuan Kaizhao, a staff member of the clinical department of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, wrote down his heart song as a doping inspector at the Winter Olympics.

Yuan Kaizhao, Department of Clinical Laboratory, Beijing Jishuitan Hospital:

The Winter Olympics Diaries | Doping Inspector: Working for Every Clean Winter Olympic Medal

My first encounter with the Olympics was at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. At that time, I was a student who had just entered the university campus and signed up for the Olympic volunteer work. 14 years later, I am already a medical worker in the capital and have the privilege of meeting the Olympics again. This time, I became a member of the service support team for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

The purpose of anti-doping efforts is to protect the physical and mental health of sports participants and to maintain the fairness of sports competitions. Previously, it was completely unfamiliar to me, and I needed to put in more energy and effort to participate in training, learn relevant professional knowledge, and actively participate in anti-doping work at major domestic events to increase practical experience.

When I learned that I had passed the final examination to become a qualified doping inspector and decided that I would participate in the anti-doping work of the Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, I was well aware of the sacred duty and glorious mission I shouldered – a work that concerned the achievements of athletes and the honor of the country.

There are 22 domestic prosecutors and 3 international prosecutors at the doping checkpoint in the Beijing Winter Olympic Village. Since entering the closed loop on January 19, we have begun countless paperless hands-on exercises in English. Following the experienced inspectors, we practiced repeatedly, trying to make ourselves more proficient before the formal inspection.

After the start of the tournament, the doping inspectors were almost the first team to arrive in the Winter Olympic Village. Start 11 hours of work every day at 4 a.m. Under the premise of complying with the requirements of epidemic prevention and control, give athletes full respect and understanding, solve problems in a more acceptable way for athletes, deal with various emergencies flexibly, and complete each step of inspection with a high sense of responsibility to ensure "zero mistakes" in the operation process.

Today, ice and snow athletes from all over the world gather in Beijing to interpret the Olympic motto of faster, higher, stronger and more united with hard work and sweat. Maintaining a fair playing environment is the responsibility of the doping inspector, and we will fight doping with a "zero tolerance" attitude, strive to keep every Winter Olympic medal clean, and make our own contribution to the hosting of a Winter Olympic Games as pure and flawless as ice and snow.
