They are Winter Olympic referees, technical officers, Winter Olympic volunteers, city service providers, and thousands of you and me who love ice and snow sports.

Listen to their stories and hear the real ice and snow "good voices".

In June 2020, the World Curling Federation announced the list of international technical officials for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, and Li Lingshu from Shanghai was selected as the representative of the Chinese referees, becoming the first Chinese curling referee in the history of the Winter Olympics (only two).

Li Lingshu, a native of Shanghai and an associate professor at Shanghai University of Chinese, became involved in curling as a coach and eventually took to the Winter Olympics as a referee (deputy teller).

On January 29, she reported to Beijing to make her debut at the Ice Cube for China's deputy planner of the Winter Olympics. Before leaving, she also accepted an exclusive interview with the surging news reporter to talk about her life of curling and physical education.

Minor bugs in the test match

Curling is known as "chess on ice", and while the two sides are brainstorming on the ice, the timer behind them is also draining second by second.

During the Beijing Winter Olympics, the timer used to display the athletes' "thinking time" was taken care of by the on-site timing team, and Li Lingshu was one of the leaders of this team.

As China's first deputy curling captain for the Winter Olympics, Li Lingshu will work with the timekeepers from Germany to manage all four chronographs and all the timekeepers.

Technically ensuring the smooth progress of the curling competition at the Winter Olympics is a task that Li Lingshu's team must complete, and at the recent beijing test match, they encountered a troublesome thing:

The test match was replaced with a new timing system, and she and the chronograph needed to be re-contacted, including other technicians. A small bug occurred during the game, the team's suspension was canceled, and later the team concluded after analysis that it was likely that the timekeeper's hand accidentally touched the button of the red or yellow pot, which would also lead to the cancellation of the suspension.

"At that time, the athletes would be very angry, why did my suspension go away? We want to make sure that the game is playing well as much as possible, and there must be no mistakes. Li Lingshu told the surging news reporter that during the summary of the test match, the whole team communicated again.

"After arriving in Beijing, we will have to do a comprehensive test of this system, and then everyone will cooperate together to avoid the situation like the test match when it comes to the Winter Olympics."

For the Beijing Winter Olympics, Li Lingshu has high expectations, "For us this is a very rare international event, I hope that through the Winter Olympics, I can make a bigger leap in my own refereeing level, and I hope to manage all the tracks and minimize mistakes." ”

"The second point is that in terms of international exchanges, whether it is in the circle of curling referees or in one of my professional fields in the future, there will be a good improvement."

As a referee, communication is important

Communication is one of the keywords that appears most frequently during the chat between Li Lingshu and the surging news reporter.

She told a few interesting little stories. At one of the Asia-Pacific Curling Championships, she was the referee on the track, and there was a small episode in the race - after a national first baseman finished throwing, he would habitually put the cover of his left foot on the track, which would affect the next team member.

"At the beginning I would take the shoe covers away, I would talk to him at halftime, and then he still forgot, and at the end of the day I told the referee of their country if I could bring a message to the player, and if it was convenient, pay attention to the other players, don't affect the other players' games. Later in the game, the player saw me again and thanked me very warmly. ”

"Our task is to make sure the race runs smoothly, so communication is important."

In the cooperation with curling professionals, Li Lingshu also experienced communication before reaching mutual trust.

It was the 2018 Suzhou World Cup, Li Lingshu had just been invited to serve as an international technical official, she also needed to be internationally recognized, it just so happened that the curling competition format was changed, the past 10 games had 38 minutes to think, now each game has a separate timing, if used up will be judged, so many participating teams are still relatively nervous, all the pressure is also in the chronograph here.

Later, the coach found the referee to question the result of the timing, and the referee also came to communicate with the timing table, "I told him that there was absolutely no mistake, and we all looked at it very carefully." Later, in order to make the work more meticulous, I made my own table, recorded how much time each pot took, and handed it to the chief referee after the game. ”

Such meticulous work has also been recognized by the chief referee, and Li Lingshu has since been given more opportunities to referee international competitions.

Transition from curling coach to curling referee

Associated with curling, Li Lingshu said to thank the "North Ice South Exhibition" - at first her specialty was aerobics, and later she was selected to enter the Shanghai Curling Talent Training Program.

The State General Administration of Sport sent three professional coaches to teach the students, and curling has since slid onto Li Lingshu's life track. Since 2012, Li Lingshu has taught the Curling Team of Shanghai Overseas Chinese University and also opened curling elective courses.

Later, because of the relationship between participating in the Shanghai University Competition, Li Lingshu also had to be a referee while leading the team, she found that the rules were not particularly profound, and at the same time, she could help her lead the team with better understanding of the rules, so she used her spare time to find the original English text on the website of the International Curler Federation and learn the curling rules.

After that, in 2014, Li Lingshu took the curling referee exam and obtained the qualification of a national first-level referee. In 2015, as the only referee representative in Shanghai, she went to Urumqi, Xinjiang as a referee for the 13th National Winter Games Test Match, working with the highest level of curling referees in China, learning from them, and the level of refereeing has made a leap forward.

In 2016, as a young backbone teacher, Li Lingshu was given the opportunity to study abroad at public expense. In Utah, usa, less than 15 minutes' drive from the Utah Olympic Center, she plays in the local league.

The curling hall manager was a pilot before, and then quit his pilot job because of his love of curling, and came to the curling hall every day to sprinkle water on the track to make ice, knowing that Li Lingshu was a curling referee and coach, and he also specially sent two curling books that he brought back from Canada.

This passion for curling infected Li Lingshu, who returned from the United States in March 2017 and decided to continue the path of curling refereeing, and the Chinese Curling Association also attaches great importance to experienced professionals like Li Lingshu.

Coincidentally, the 2017 Women's Curling World Championships was held in Beijing, Li Lingshu also did refereeing and translation, and had a lot of contact with various international technical officials and referees with the highest level of domestic refereeing, and since 2018, she has officially begun to referee international competitions.

Colleges and universities open courses to popularize ice and snow knowledge

During this period, Li Lingshu, an associate professor at Shanghai Overseas Chinese University, has also been promoting curling in colleges and universities.

Recently, she opened the "Ice and Snow Sports Bilingual" course, which is open to the whole school, and more than 80 students have chosen this course this semester, and more and more people have begun to learn new knowledge of ice and snow sports.

In addition, every semester, Li Lingshu also takes time to come to Shanghai's ice and snow special school to teach land curling. At the same time, Li Lingshu also applied to the domestic MOOC platform to impart ice and snow knowledge online.

"The biggest problem with curling in Shanghai is still the venue, now there are curling lanes in Xuhui, Huangpu Sports School and Qingpu, and our school does not have a venue, and now I am in a special school, and they have a road that is not expensive but has a high degree of simulation." Solving the site problem is still more critical. ”

For the future development of Shanghai curling, Li Lingshu also gave advice - I believe that after the Beijing Winter Olympics, ice and snow sports have been inserted into wings and taken root in the hearts of more people.
