In 1892, the International Skating Union was officially established in Switzerland and established the rules for the competition of the project. In 1924, figure skating was included in the first Winter Olympics.

Basic format
The rules of the figure skating competition are more complicated, in general, the final score of the contestants is calculated by adding the technical action points and the content points of the program, and subtracting all the deducted points, and the highest score is the champion. Elements of technical action include jumping, rotation, footwork, lifting, twisting, throwing, spiraling, etc. The elements of the program content mainly include sliding techniques, action connections, performance completion, program composition and musical expression. Players who violate the rules in terms of time, action, music, costumes and props will be deducted points during the competition.
The short program consists of 8 movements and connecting steps specified in 3 different jumps, 3 different rotations and 2 different steps. Athletes choose their own music and arrange a program of no more than 2 minutes and 40 seconds according to the requirements. Ratings include prescribed action points and performance points. The referee first evaluates the prescribed action points according to the quality, difficulty and completion of the action, and then shows the second score according to the balance of the content arrangement and the consistency of the music, speed, posture and musical characteristics - the performance score.
Free skating is made up of jumping, spinning, footwork, and various poses. Athletes choose their own music and arrange a balanced set of programs according to the rules. The time of the free skating competition is 4 minutes and 30 seconds for men's singles and 4 minutes for women's singles. The free skating score includes a technical level score and a performance score.
The performance free skating is composed of a specified number of jumps, spins and footwork. The program mainly highlights the expression of music and artistic performance. Ratings include glide technique and performance. The race time is from 3 minutes 30 seconds to 4 minutes 30 seconds.
The Ice Dance Competition consists of four items: prescribed dance, creative choreography, free dance and performance dance. The Winter Olympics and World Championships are played on only 3 events, each on 3 days. Day 1 is a prescribed dance, and day 2 is a choreography. The prescribed dance is a competition based on the prescribed music, patterns, footwork and repetitions. There are 22 types of prescribed dances, and 2 of them are skated in each competition.
