Recently, a new method of embryo morphological assessment of assisted reproductive technology, the Time-Lapse imaging system, was introduced by Luohu Hospital for reproductive medicine clinical use. The application of this system provides another advanced technical guarantee for infertile couples undergoing IVF treatment.

Dr. Liu Shangjie, a doctor of reproductive medicine at Luohu Hospital, introduced that the time-lapse imaging system has great advantages in observing and evaluating the dynamic development process and embryo selection of embryos in in vitro culture environment.

Dr. Liu Shangjie introduced that timelapse technology is a new way of embryo morphological assessment of assisted reproductive technology. It mainly uses time-lapse imaging technology to take real-time photography of embryos in an in vitro culture environment, usually the shooting interval set by jet lag imaging technology is 5 minutes per photo, and the entire acquired digital picture of the embryo is converted into a dynamic growth video, which constitutes the growth file of the embryonic development, so that the development process of the entire embryo can be recorded in complete and detail.

After the embryologist applies this technique, without removing the embryo from the incubator, the entire dynamic development process can be continuously observed through video images, and the kinetic parameters that predict the developmental potential of the embryo are obtained, providing a strong reference for selecting embryos suitable for transfer. The application of kinetic parameters provided by the jet lag imaging system combined with morphological selection of transferred embryos can improve embryo implantation rates and clinical pregnancy rates.

At present, the time difference imaging culture system of Shenzhen Luohu Hospital Reproductive Medicine Center has been officially launched, which has multiple independent wet culture chambers, all equipped with 500W pixel full HD cameras, which capture embryo images from 11 focal planes every 5 minutes.

Multiple research data have proved that the blastocyst formation rate of embryos cultured by the jet lag imaging system is significantly higher than that of embryos cultured in traditional incubators. This provides strong support for patients to improve clinical outcomes (acquisition of clinical pregnancy).

What are the advantages of jet lag imaging?

1. The observation of the embryo ensures a stable growth environment for the embryo. Because there is no need to move the embryos back and forth out of the incubator, the embryos are always in a stable temperature and gas environment, avoiding the interference caused by traditional methods to the embryos.

2. According to the characteristics of the embryo as a three-dimensional spherical shape, the focal length can be automatically changed when collecting images, so that the observation of the embryo is faster, more detailed and comprehensive.

3. The dynamic process of change during embryonic development can be recorded. The time to collect images can be reduced to a few minutes, so that the continuous recording of embryonic images constitutes a dynamic "embryonic life movie". Adding dynamic parameter indicators to the classical morphological score can improve clinical pregnancy rates.
