Guardian: Roy Keane is Sunderland's top pick and could be offered a short-term contract until the end of the season

The Guardian reported that Roy Keane has become the first choice for Sunderland's manager and he may return to the Stadium of Light to coach.

Keane, who was Sunderland's head coach from 2006 to 2008, is likely to become the new head coach after Sunderland head coach Lee Johnson was sacked. The former United midfielder led Sunderland to the Premier League in 2007 and resigned after a feud with former boss Short. Although he later assisted Martin O'Neal in coaching Ireland, Keane has not held the club's managerial role since being sacked by Ipswich in 2011.

After 13 years away from Sunderland, Keane is expected to return to Sunderland, Sunderland boss and billionaire Kirill Luis Dreyfus wants to try to get the club back into the Premier League, but first he must find a suitable manager. Conversations with Keane over the past 48 hours have proven that he has found the right person to bring new life to Sunderland. Although the team are currently third in the table, Johnson was sacked on Sunday after losing 6-0 to Bolton Wanderers 24 hours ago.

Louis Dreyfus said he had received applications from around the world, but he appeared interested in offering Keane a short-term contract until the end of the season, and if things didn't go as planned, he might return to work on the TV show. If Keane decides to abandon such an attempt and choose to stay at the studio, Louis Dreyfus has plenty of backup options, such as former Middlesbrough coach Neil Warnock, Jonathan Woodgate, grant McCann.

Sunderland was impressed with McCann's achievements in leading Yorkshire last season. Woodgate also excelled in the Bournemouth league last season.
