On January 30, the Spain 35km Race Walking Open Championships were held in Lepe.

In the women's division, local maria Perez took the lead in hitting the line 2:39:16, setting the second best result in world history.

The current world's number one result is 2:38:24 set by Russia's Klavdiya Afanasyeva in 2019.

In Spain, the second place in the women's 35 km race walk was Laura Garcia-Caro, with a result of 2:48:05. Third place was Maria Juarez, with a time of 2:53:40. Portugal's Ines Henriques, the 2017 World Championships women's 50 km race walk champion, also competed, finishing fourth in 2:54:46.

In the men's division, local star Lopez won the championship 2:27:54.

Note: The World Championships in Athletics (Eugene) to be held in July will be the first to have a 35 km race walk for men and women, replacing the previous 50 km race walk. The standards for the men's and women's 35 km race walk are 2:33:00 and 2:54:00.
