Reporter: Newcastle is interested in Villa defender Taggart, and the team also wants to sign Nketiah

According to the Telegraph, Newcastle still hopes to sign two more players before the end of the winter window, including Nketiah and Taggart.

Newcastle have spent more than £90m this month, but they have not finished signings, with only the last 24 hours left in the transfer window, with Newcastle looking to strengthen both offensively and defensively. The club is still closely watching Jesse Lingard's situation at Manchester United, although according to those involved in the negotiations, it is already unlikely that Jesse Lingard will move to Newcastle.

That puts Nketia and Taggart as the next gossip targets, with Newcastle confident they have at least one player on Monday. They have signed three players – Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimarães – and Newcastle want to avoid relegation.

The negotiations are picking up the pace, although it is not yet known whether Arsenal boss Arteta will approve the sale of Nketiah, the 22-year-old, although his contract is less than 6 months left; Newcastle's interest in Taggart has emerged in the recent past, and they have made significant progress over the weekend.

Newcastle executives will continue to speak with Arsenal and Villa, who want to reach a mutually acceptable deal by Monday's 11pm deadline. According to previous reports, they reached a £13m fee with Brighton to bring Dan Byrne back to the team.

This means that, in addition to Guimarães, Eddie Howe has signed the players with Premier League experience he aspires to. It was always thought that relying on foreign players in relegation was too risky, but Newcastle brought in Guimarães because the latter's potential seemed to them to be enormous.
