Wuhan University "Zhu Yubi Medical Award": Looking back at the founding of the first medical school in Jingchu Dadi

People's Daily health client Zhang He

At the beginning of the new year in 2022, The 2021 "Zhu Yubi Medical Award" of Wuhan University was released, which is the highest level award in the field of medicine of Wuhan University, and rewards teachers and students with outstanding achievements and important contributions in medical majors every year. When it comes to the "Zhu Yubi Medical Award", there is no one person around - Zhu Yubi, the founder of the Medical Department of Wuhan University.

On the banks of Wuhan's East Lake, Professor Zhu Yixuan, an 83-year-old pioneer of aerial surveying and mapping in the field of mainland surveying, remote sensing and mapping, sat quietly by the lake, recounting the past in his father's memory. She told reporters that since then, "returning to China and building a world-class medical school for her hometown" has become a "seed" buried deep in her father's heart.

What many people did not expect was that this "seed" really crossed the ocean in 1934, returned to the motherland to take root and sprout, and grew from the Hubei Medical College established in 1943 to the medical department of Wuhan University.

"After returning to China, I want to build a medical school in Hubei"

In 1926, Zhu Yubi graduated from the Tongde Medical College in Shanghai, and in 1929 received his MD from the University of Göttingen, Germany, and was accepted as a member of the German Surgical Society, becoming the first Chinese in the field of German medical scholarship.

From 1929 to 1934, while my father was studying for a doctorate in medicine and working in Germany, a Swedish classmate asked him, Where are you from China? My father said, I am from Hubei Province, China. The Swedish students continued to ask, how big is Hubei? How many people? My father was particularly proud to say that Hubei has the Yangtze River, nearly 200,000 square kilometers of land, and a population of 36 million. Hearing this, the Swedish students sighed: This is bigger than the whole of Sweden! Then I asked, how many medical universities are there in Hubei? The father was momentarily dumbfounded. Because 90 years ago, because of the war, a medical college was closed, and I could only say with a red face that there was no medical school in the whole of Hubei Province.

Professor Zhu Yixuan told the Health Times reporter that since then, "returning to China and building a world-class medical school for his hometown" has become a "seed" buried deep in his father's heart.

What many people did not expect was that this "seed" really crossed the ocean and returned to the motherland to take root and sprout.

"On 13 February 1934, Dad received his doctorate and was admitted as a member of the German Surgical Society, becoming the first Chinese to go down in the annals of German medicine." Zhu Yixuan told reporters that in the winter of 1942, eight years after returning to China, his father received a letter from Hubei from his classmate Yang Guangdi and others who studied in Germany, saying that Chen Cheng and Zhu Huaibing invited him to return to Hubei to prepare for the establishment of Hubei Medical College, so he immediately actively selected a school site and raised funds, opened ten courses, tried to find teachers, and successively hired Yang Guangdi, He Qinsheng, Liu Guliang, Dong Daoyun, Hu Jinxin, Yu Chuanxian and other elites to teach, and at the same time formulated strict school rules along with the rules of German colleges and universities. He also personally traveled to Chongqing, asked for the latest teaching reference materials from the British and American embassies, and donated a microscope given by the British ambassador Needham to the school, along with the one his father had brought back from Germany.

The day to remember is finally here. In 1943, he successfully organized and enrolled hubei provincial medical colleges, and set up internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, dermatology and other majors, with a six-year study system, six basic courses in the first three years, seven professional courses and clinical internships in the last three years. My father personally taught German and anatomy. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Hubei Medical College moved back to Wuhan and was later renamed Hubei Medical University.

Zhu Yixuan recalled that later many people asked their fathers, in an era of peace, why did they use so much effort to build a medical school, is it not good to be a surgeon? Every now and then, my father would say very firmly, I will always remember the look in the eyes of the Belgian classmate when he knew that there was no medical school in the whole of Hubei, and at that time, he vowed to build a medical school in Hubei.

"In order to build a school, my father suffered a lot." Zhu Yubi once recalled to her daughter in her later years that at that time, there was no money, no land, no medical experts to teach, and everyone and resources had to be invited and borrowed one by one. But when I remembered the bitterness, my father would say the same sentence at the end of each chat: We have come back after learning, is it not to make the people suffer less.

"One of the people I want to thank the most in my life is my father-in-law, Zhu Yubi."

Zhu Yixuan's husband, Li Deren, sat next to his wife and children, and always couldn't help but interject. Because the person he was mentioning had helped him make a very important decision. Zhu Yixuan's husband, Li Deren, also had white hair and sat next to his wife, and he always couldn't help but want to interject. Because the person he was mentioning had helped him make a very important decision.

As an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one of the scientists who led China's remote sensing surveying and mapping to the world's first, Li Deren still remembers that in the early days of reform and opening up, in 1982, the state sent a large number of outstanding talents to study abroad, and when it was difficult for him to choose which country to study, his father-in-law, who was the consultant dean of Hubei Medical College, resolutely let him give up staying in the United States and learn German from scratch: to go abroad, go to the world's number one country in the surveying and mapping remote sensing major; study abroad, I am encouraged. But remember to go home after school. Only by returning to China can we benefit the compatriots of the motherland.

"That's what he did himself." The two old men said in unison. Zhu Yixuan said that as the founder of the medical department of Wuhan University, his father Zhu Yubi has always warned his descendants to be innocent and treat patients sincerely. And the inner spirit of the older generation of medical scientists has also been flowing under the Luojia Mountain today, nourishing generations of medical students on the jingchu land.

The "Zhu Yubi Medical Award" was established to inherit the feelings and spirit of the older generation of medical scientists

On September 11, 1986, my father died of illness. Although he was 83 years old at the time, he always felt that he was still young, and then he thought about it carefully because until the age of 78, he still insisted on going to the doctor to save people. Zhu Yixuan recalled that after the medical school gradually entered the right track, his father successively founded the modern Wuhan University People's Hospital, the Central South Hospital of Wuhan University and the Wuhan University Stomatological Hospital.

During the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, the People's Hospital of Wuhan University accepted hundreds of seriously injured soldiers of the Chinese Volunteer Army, and their father personally operated, bone grafted, and healed their wounds. After the Tangshan earthquake, the Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University treated a large number of victims injured by the Tangshan earthquake. During the "new crown" period, his students did not hesitate to receive patients in various hospitals and cabin hospitals in Wuhan. Zhu Yixuan told reporters that in order to make patients feel at ease, many patients who came to Wuhan from rural Hubei to see a doctor, he went to help, and once took a rubber and thick leg patient to his home to eat for a long time.

"Zhongnan Hospital has a guest house, a room for several people, which was originally a place to charge for external fees, but it was always crammed by my father full of patients who looked down on the disease." Zhu Yixuan's hands compared the corridor of the guest house with all the scenes of patients, and her eyes were full of respect. Also influenced by her father, Zhu Yixuan's sister, Zhu Yubi's 17-year-old eldest daughter Zhu Yilian joined the army to resist the United States and aid Korea, graduated from Bethune Medical University and stayed on to work, and also became a medical professor, and completed her father's instructions at Bethune Medical University and Central South Hospital for life: to see a doctor and save people throughout her life.

2006 was the 20th year of Zhu Yubi's death. In order to motivate future students and commemorate their father, Zhu Yixuan and Li Deren jointly donated money with alumni of Wuhan University to set up the "Zhu Yubi Medical Award" of Wuhan University. Today, it is also the highest level award in the field of medicine for Wuhan University. The award was awarded for the first time at the 60th anniversary of the School of Medicine of Wuhan University, and has been awarded for 9 sessions so far, with a total of 94 teachers and students winning awards.

In the nearly 20 years since the establishment of the scholarship, Li Deren and Zhu Yixuan have always taken out the national awards they have received and donated nearly one million. On December 29, 2021, Li Deren and Zhu Yixuan, who are already 83 years old, donated another 200,000 yuan. The "lucky winners" on the winning stage this time are all doctors who fought in the frontline during the epidemic in Wuhan in early 2020.

Seeing the two white-haired old men walking to the podium again and again, Wang Xinghuan, president of The Central South Hospital of Wuhan University and former president of Leishenshan Hospital, also decided at the scene: donated the 200,000 yuan won by his second prize in 2021 National Science and Technology. Referring to the scene of the day, Wang Xinghuan told reporters that it is a continuation of the feelings and spirit of the older generation of medical experts, and it is also the essence of the spirit of leishen mountain in the past.

On January 5, 2022, when asked about the follow-up development of the scholarship, Li Deren and Zhu Yixuan suddenly looked at each other and showed guilt, saying that they had not done enough.

"When our remote sensing technology makes some more money, I will continue to donate to the Medical Department to encourage medical students to wholeheartedly treat diseases and save people. After speaking, the two white-haired old men laughed together.

The feelings of home and country have become the roots of generations of people

At the award ceremony of the 2021 "Zhu Yubi Medical Award", Li Deren and Zhu Yixuan told a story about the unknown past of their father Zhu Yubi.

Zhu Yixuan recalled that during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, his father was already a doctor of medicine in Germany, and when he learned that the front was in urgent need of field military doctors, he immediately threw himself into the pen, resigned from Tongji University in Ganzhou, Jiangxi, and was recruited to Anshun, Guizhou, as a surgical instructor at the Kuomintang Army Military Medical School, with the rank of major general. When waiting for the boat on the way through Yangshuo, Guilin, Guangxi, because there were many people going to Anshun, they waited for two months.

In the two months of waiting for the ship, in order to have a strong physique after joining the army, my father climbed bilian peak every day, and waited for two months on the boat, and then climbed bilian peak for two consecutive months. Although the mountain is steep and steep, after reaching the top, the heart is relaxed, and the mountains and rivers of Guilin are under the heavens! In order to commemorate the days of hardship but tempering the will, day after day, the three big words "good to climb the summit" were carved on the cliff wall of the mountain.

In 2020, after guangxi zhuang autonomous region learned of Zhu Lao's deeds, it specially sent people to search through many mountains, found Zhu Yubi's handwriting on the mountain, and specially copied three big characters and sent them back to Wuhan University. The cliff carvings of "Climbing good" have become historical relics of Yangshuo in Guilin to witness the War of Resistance Against Japan.

Li Deren took the handwritten photo of his father-in-law and told the Health Times reporter that his father-in-law had wanted to find the words he had engraved on the mountain many times, because he had always felt that the real useful talent should be able to bend and stretch, not afraid of difficulties, and always have an ambition and state of mind to "climb to the top". And these three words have now become the motto of many medical practitioners of Wuhan University, including Wang Xinghuan.

When sorting out his father-in-law's manuscript, Li Deren also proudly introduced his efforts in the field of medicine as an academician of the Department of Geosciences of the Academy of Sciences and the Department of Electronic Information of the Academy of Engineering. "At that time, the construction of Vulcan Mountain and Leishen Mountain, every day's progress and changes, I led the students to use the most advanced remote sensing technology to carry out satellite mapping, to inform the world of 'China speed'; in 2020, Leishenshan Hospital's killing robot and remote consultation 5G technology are also donated by us..."

And these years, Zhu Yixuan has not been idle, and Dunhuang Mr. Fan Jinshi, Wang Xudong dean of the friendship is very good, is using remote sensing digital technology to help Dunhuang better preserve cultural heritage, now Dunhuang open to the public museum can only see ten holes, but through the film museum screening, you can see other areas that have not yet been opened, including I took students Du Zhiqiang, Huang Xianfeng, Zhang Fan, Zhang Zhichao and other digital cultural products ...

In addition to using remote sensing digital methods to protect cultural heritage, Zhu Yixuan also brought her wife and children together, since 2015, every year with students from all over the country and volunteers from all fronts to participate in desert planting in Xinjiang's Maigeti County to help green and healthy ecological development.

Today' Wuhan University Medical College, sitting on Luojia Mountain, surrounded by the water of East Lake, the apricot forest is dense, and the fragrance of flowers is overflowing. The home where Zhu Yixuan and Li Deren lived for a lifetime is the academician building in the corner of the school. When the sun is good, Zhu Yixuan will always take out the introspective diary of her father since she founded the school and put it on the balcony to dry. She said that this is the root of her father, the root of her children, and the root of Wuda medicine.
