"We have been fishing for starfish on the seabed for more than ten consecutive days, going out to sea at about seven o'clock every day, going back at one o'clock at noon, and every day when everyone is more, we can catch eight or nine hundred catties." Diver Li Bin told Lightning News reporters.
It is understood that the site of the starfish invasion is located in the sea area of the island city of Red Island, and these areas are the main areas of local shellfish farming. After the starfish invaded the area, they specially devoured clams and sea oysters raised by local farmers, causing serious losses to farmers. Some farmers admit that the cost of their own sown shellfish is more than one million yuan, and it has now been lost.
Zhao Yuchang, manager of the Hongdao fishing port, told reporters that the flood of starfish only appeared once more than a decade ago. In fact, this situation has been around since october last year, when a diver could pick up about two thousand pounds a day, and since then, they have grown to the size of a palm.
Regarding the reasons for the large number of starfish gathering, Zhang Guangtao, a researcher at the Institute of Oceanography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told that there are generally two reasons for the outbreak of starfish, one is the gathering of adults, because there is more food in the breeding area, and the adults will migrate from different places to the breeding area; the other possible reason is that during the previous reproductive season, there are more adult starfish that have survived.
At the same time, Zhang Guangtao also told reporters that because of the excessive feeding habit of starfish, its harm is relatively large, and it may kill more food than eating. At present, the better way is to continue salvage and clean up in a timely manner.
