Mullenstein: United missed out on Guardiola and Klopp and the club has to look to the future

According to the Newspaper Sun, Rene Meulensteen, Ferguson's assistant coach at Manchester United, talked about the philosophy of the Ferguson era and the characteristics of his successor.

Mullenstein is from the Netherlands and is now an assistant coach for the Australian team. René spent six years on the youth team and then in the first team for six years until Ferguson retired in 2013.

"When I was with the Australian national team, they asked me; 'Is it very stressful at Manchester United?' But did you know that this is not the case? We had a great coach – Sir Alex Ferguson, who was like a detailed plan, a strong sense of identity, a firm conviction, everything was successful and we never felt the pressure. ”

'Manchester United are characterized by speed, strength and unpredictability in attack, which is why our opponents respect and fear us.

Liverpool and Manchester City are currently the premier league's best teams to regain the ball, and Mullenstein has a high degree of respect for Klopp and Guardiola.

"United missed out on these two good coaches who could have a really big impact on the club. If you ask the liverpool or Manchester City players, 'Do you know what you're doing?' Their answer must have been yes. But if you ask the Manchester United players I don't think you'll get the same answer. ”

"What you should do is look at two or three years from now and that's how a club maintains stability and continuity. I'm not sure if the club has done that in the last eight years, have we found the next De Gea, Maguire, Cavani or even Cristiano Ronaldo? ”

"In our time, we have always looked at players from two perspectives – the present and the future. For example, the former Van Persie represents the present, but you have to think about who can replace him in the future. Just as Guardiola treated Foden, he has always been called the 'future', and when David Silva leaves, Foden can take on the heavy responsibility, and that's what I want to say. ”

Mullenstein sees the shift between Ferguson's retirement and his successor as the root of United's current problems.

"I don't like the way Louis van Gaal talks to people, and sometimes he hurts the dignity of others. In fact he underestimated the level of the Premier League, he thought a team like Stoke City could easily win, but he didn't realise the intensity of the Premier League and what Manchester United fans wanted. He put too much emphasis on possession, and under that possession the pace was too slow for the players to create anything. ”

As for Mourinho, although he doesn't care about possession, he left Manchester United after two and a half seasons and it is difficult for him to find a way to play that guarantees results and plays well.

Mullenstein said: "As long as he doesn't get the players he wants in the summer window, then you know there will be problems. ”

Regarding Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Murenstine said: "He's a lovely guy, maybe he's too affectionate. You always need a year and a half to implement your plan and get it done step by step, like Klopp did at Liverpool and Guardiola at Manchester City. ”

'Despite being two different styles, they both succeeded, and it took them about a season and a half."

On Lonnick, he said: "Lonnick's problem is that he has to both guarantee results and get the players to recognize his philosophy. For now, Manchester United is like a car driving on the sand, even if the tires are spinning, but the car can't go anywhere. ”
