As for whether the oil is fully synthetic, the key depends on the base oil.
According to the conventional classification in the past, base oils are divided into 5 categories. Directly refined from petroleum is called mineral oil (class 1), and then hydrorefined is called class 2 base oil, highly hydrocracked or hydrogenated isomerized wax is called class 3 (GTL natural gas oil is called class 3 +), while PAO is class 4, and esters are class 5.
There are many ways to manufacture synthetic oils, including natural gas oil (GTL) that breaks up natural gas molecules to resynthetic, coal synthesis oil (CTL) that recombines chemical molecules from coal, and even BTL synthetic oils based on biochemicals.
And high-end alcohol PAG base oils, and even plant-based castor base oils... How many categories do you say they should be divided into? Even the PAO category is divided into several types!
4 types of "pure PAO oil" is not realistic,

Because there are too many categories, it is impossible to assign them a "6 category", "7 category" and "8 category", so it is all called "synthetic oil".
On the other hand, we know that although the oil is composed of base oil + additives, it does not mean that there is only 1 base oil in a motor oil. In fact, in a bottle of motor oil, there are multiple base oils at the same time.
For example, many synthetic engine oils, the general formula is to take 3 types of oil as the main body, and then add a certain amount of 4 types of PAO, and then in order to ensure the viscosity index, a certain amount of 2 types of refined mineral oils are added, and finally integrated into additives. Another example is some high-end lubricating oil, with 3 types of oil as the main body, adding a certain amount of lipid 5 types of oil, and then additives to serve.
This situation is currently very mainstream and routine.
Therefore, normally there is no "pure PAO + additive" or "pure ester + additive" fully synthetic engine oil in the world!
Because the reason is simple, because the oil additive can hardly fit into the 100% PAO base oil, and pure PAO does not have any lubrication capacity, it needs other carrier oils to provide physical lubrication.
Here is a point where a merchant likes to "exaggerate publicity", the so-called "PAO full synthesis" is actually to say that the amount of PAO added to the base oil is relatively large (for example, a peak claims to be pure 4 + 5 types of base oil, in fact, it still uses 2 types of oils to make steel lubricants and viscosity improvers, but the base oil is 4 types of pao + 5 types of polyol esters).
Pure ester base oils hardly have any high temperature oxidation stability.
The same is true for "total ester synthesis", which means that the amount of esters (which can be monoesterides, diesters, polyol esters) in the base oil is relatively large. Ester base oils are not particularly high-tech to be honest, our common sulfide lard, castor seed oil, are counted as Class 5 base oils.
So don't be particularly superstitious about the five categories, this is not a rare thing
PAO was added to make the oil's longevity better, decay more slowly, and the oil more stable. Although the lubrication ability of pure esters is amazing, its water resistance and longevity, as well as carbon deposition problems, are very "weak chicken".
As for why cheap cars, many people in old cars do not recommend using full synthesis, the main problem is that the oil price with high PAO added is absolutely cheap!
Why? Because PAO is very expensive! But if the base oil is almost all based on Class 3 oil, then of course the price will drop a lot, because Class 3 oil is relatively cheap! So the price of 3 types of synthetic oils can already be close to the level of "semi-synthesis", why do we still have to buy "semi-synthetic"?
