According to the European Network quoted by the European Union News Agency, recently, an Italian teacher took 3 years of leave of 769 days, suspected of blackmailing social welfare and going out to earn money, and was reported by colleagues to attract the investigation of the tax authorities. At present, the tax authorities have temporarily withheld the welfare payment received by the teacher, and the relevant case is being heard by the court.

The case was reportedly involved in a 47-year-old high school math teacher who took 459 days of sick leave and 310 days of parental leave over a three-year period. Although he was able to provide a doctor's certificate, colleagues still called the police. After investigation, the teacher was not sick at all, or even rarely returned home, but traveled around Italy to work as a business consultant for several companies, and has been confirmed to earn at least 97,000 euros and applied for sickness and child welfare benefits, involving an amount of 13,000 euros.

The teacher involved was from Sicily, who taught mathematics at an industrial technical high school in the northeastern province of Pordenone, but he took a long leave of absence, most of whom claimed to be ill or to care for children. His family doctor in his hometown of Agrigento signed a medical certificate for him, asked him to take a long term of sick leave, and finally his colleagues at the school couldn't bear to decide to call the police.

Investigators tracked his highway toll records and hotel reservations and found his whereabouts suspicious during his leave of absence. The police and the local financial department found that the teacher did not get sick or stay at home to take care of the children during the holidays, but was engaged in consulting work providing business consulting, has been traveling around Italy to work for different companies, and has been confirmed to earn 97,000 euros, including a salary in the environmental protection department, earning nearly 40,000 euros.

Between 2016 and 2019, the teachers applied for sickness and child protection benefits, involving a total of 13,000 euros. The judge had ruled earlier that the benefits should be withheld before the trial, and the teacher's lawyer requested that the proceedings be moved to Sicily, but was refused. At present, the court has charged the teachers involved in the case with fraud and the use of false certificates. (Huang Xin)
