Since losing the ko in the first set by Vincent Luque in 2016, he has played a four-game winning streak in 2017, ended with a points loss to Geoff Neal in January 2019, and then a six-game win-1 no-result result, including last June's point-out victory over Demian Maia and a december point-out victory over Stephen Thompson. Mohammed is currently ranked 5th in the middleweight of the official UFC rankings.
The match also identified a high-profile heavyweight showdown, with "Hugging Bear" Chris Barnett (22-7, 17 K, 0 S) against Slovakian rookie Martin Boodai (9-1, 7 K, 1 S).
