Recently, Apple CEO Tim Cook was checking his email when he saw a threatening photo of a loaded gun. Cook remembers the woman who sent the letter, and she sent about 200 emails to Cook between October and mid-November 2020 alone. The woman, who used "Cook" as her last name on social media platforms, claimed to be Cook's wife and had twins with Cook.
But, as you may have heard, Cook has been making his homosexuality public since 2014. If the woman was just blackmailing, she might not have done much market research.
The woman reportedly tracked Cook's apartment in Palo Alto and wandered around. Eventually one day the woman tried to enter Cook's home, but was stopped by security guards and told to leave. She pretended to obey and then returned to the neighborhood and waited in the car. After the palo alto police arrived at the scene, the woman tried to escape, and the police did not find any weapons in her car, but still confiscated her car because her driver's license had expired.
The woman also registered multiple fake companies with "highly offensive company names" and appointed Cook as a supervisor, director or agent. While stalking Cook, the woman continued to send a large number of emails to Cook. A week before Christmas 2021, the woman asked Apple for hundreds of millions of dollars, and then she would forgive and forget everything.
After not receiving a response from Cook and Apple, the woman's email messages escalated significantly and eventually became threatening and highly disturbing, some of which contained photographs of revolvers and ammunition. At the same time, the woman claimed that her patience was running out.
Under this high-intensity harassment, Apple filed a lawsuit with the court, accusing the woman of stalking and threatening behavior, believing that the woman was carrying a weapon and endangering Cook's personal safety, and filed a restraining order against the woman. The judge granted the request, prohibiting the woman from owning a firearm, accessing any Apple employees, entering any Apple assets and being close to Cook's residence.
According to Apple's filing with the Securities and Futures Commission, Cook spends hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on personal security.
