Based on his original research, Bailey's book is firmly rooted in the fertile soil of science. But as he demonstrates, science doesn't always provide predictable or even comfortable definitive answers. In fact, most of what he's going to say is sure to generate as many tricky questions as the answer.
Are gay men really more feminine than other men? Do they really prefer to be barbers over lumberjacks? Are all male transgender people women trapped in men's bodies, or are some of these men simply attracted and seduced by the wonderful idea of masturbating to be women? You'll meet Danny, an eight-year-old boy whose favorite game is Play House, and who longs to dress up as a princess on Halloween. There's also Martin, a professional makeup artist who was plagued by inner turmoil when he was younger but is now openly gay and has many men as sexual partners. And Kim, a very sexy transgender person, "she" still has the iconic male sexual organ, the penis, and while waiting for the sex reassignment surgery, she is also a dancer and call girl, serving men who like men who have a special fetish of male transformation into a woman.
These and other stories make it clear that some men – and men who become women – only want to understand themselves and society, which makes them feel like outsiders to society. There are parents, friends, and family seeking answers to confusing and complex questions.
Some researchers hope to one day truly grasp the nature of human sexuality.
