The Universe 25 experiment is one of the most terrifying experiments in the history of science, an attempt by scientists to explain human society through the behavior of a group of rats. The idea for "Universe 25" came from American scientist John Calhoun, who created an "ideal world" in which hundreds of rats live and reproduce.
More specifically, Calhoun built what's known as "Rat Paradise," a specially designed space where rodents can get an abundance of food and water, as well as a large living space. Initially, he placed four pairs of rats that began to breed in a short period of time, causing their numbers to grow rapidly. However, after 315 days, their reproduction began to decrease significantly. When the number of rodents reached 600, a hierarchy was formed between them, and then the so-called "untouchables" appeared. Larger rodents begin to attack the group, with the result that many males begin to "collapse" psychologically. As a result, instead of protecting themselves, the females become aggressive towards their offspring. Over time, females exhibit more and more aggressive behaviors, isolated elements, and a lack of reproductive emotions. The birth rate is low, while mortality in young rodents increases. Then, a new class of male rodents emerged, the so-called "pretty mice." They refuse to mate with females or "fight" for their space.
They only care about eating and sleeping. At one point, "beautiful men" and "isolated women" made up the majority of the population. Over time, the mortality rate of young rats reaches 100% and the reproduction rate reaches zero. Homosexuality was observed in endangered rats, despite the abundance of food, while an increase in cannibalism increased. Two years after the experiment began, the colony's last baby was born. By 1973, he had killed the last rat in the 25th universe. John Calhoun repeated the same experiment 25 more times, each time with the same result.
This scientific work has been used as a model to explain social collapse, and this research is the focus of urban sociology research.
