Today in history: Riley, the divine operator, became the fastest NBA leader to reach 500 wins

32 years ago today, the Lakers, led by Pat Riley, beat the Pacers 120-111 to claim the 500th game of his NBA coaching career, making him the fastest manager in NBA history to achieve that win. At the same time, he is also the 16th coach to achieve this achievement.

Pat Riley played for the Rockets, Lakers and Suns before winning the NBA championship with the Lakers in 1972. At the end of the 1975–76 season, Pat Riley officially announced his retirement.

After retiring, Pat Riley coached the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks and Miami Heat, where he won 1,210 wins and five championships, and was named the NBA Coach of the Year in 1990, 1993 and 1997.
