According to reports, on the 23rd, about 3,000 people, including families with children, walked from the city of Tapachula near the Guatemalan border to the Mexican capital.

Erinho Mujica, one of the organizers of the caravan, said he would lead the group to Mexico City to protest the lack of government assistance in the south and to demand legal documents allowing migrants to move freely in Mexico.

On that day, there were about 400 law enforcement officers at a highway checkpoint in Tapachula who tried to block the road but were broken through by many migrants.

A video shows people carrying backpacks and children squeezing past a group of riot police trying to control the crowd. A family, including women and children, was knocked to the ground in a crowded crowd, their belongings scattered on the ground. The Mexican government's National Institute for Migration condemned the violence in the video.

Among the mass migrants trying to move north through Mexico, some say they hope to eventually reach the U.S. border, and the number of migrants trying to enter the U.S. has set new records. The U.S. government arrested more than 1.7 million immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border this fiscal year, the highest on record.
