Feng Yuan, nurse in the emergency intensive care unit of Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Dalian University

We in the emergency intensive care unit are like a big family. On weekdays, our daily work is carried out step by step, new admission, transfer, rescue, discharge... Tense and orderly, but what will happen in the next minute, everything is unknown.

In the spring of that year, when Uncle Zhang was first admitted to the hospital due to a fall injury from a height, his life was in danger, he was in a coma, and he had many fractures around him, as well as blood pneumothorax and lumbar vertebrae fractures. The medical staff immediately carried out rescue and took a series of treatment measures. He was sent by his boss and a few co-workers, and after a few days, his boss disappeared, and we could not get in touch with Uncle Zhang's family.

A life is in front of us, and it is impossible for anyone to give it up, let alone us medical personnel. Therefore, the treatment proceeded as usual, and Uncle Zhang was also very strong. After a period of time, his condition was stable, and other problems had basically recovered, but due to the fracture of the lumbar vertebra, he had sequelae - paralysis of the lower body, unable to take care of himself, and needed human care. At that time, his medical expenses were insufficient, and we tried again to contact his family and work, but to no avail. Our original routine work was broken up – he lived there for three and a half years. Three and a half years is not long, it is not short, but day after day, year after year, we take care of this "special family" like a baby.

That fall, an urgent phone call broke the silence of the night, and the green passage admitted a drunken patient with intracerebral hemorrhage, whose identity information is unknown. Patients were admitted to our department, and while first aid was being given, we searched for their families through the police. Although it has not been found, the treatment has not stopped for a moment. After a period of treatment, the patient's condition gradually improved and his consciousness gradually recovered, but he was paralyzed on the left half of his body due to cerebral hemorrhage. He told us that his surname was Ai, that he had no family, and that he had lived alone. In this way, our department has another special "family", which has been more than a year now.

In recent years, we have taken care of special family members, but in fact, we have encountered many difficulties. They can't take care of themselves, they need help getting dressed and going to the toilet, changing sheets; the abandonment of their families, leading them to have depression tendencies, sometimes harsh words, and even suicidal tendencies, we have to carry out psychological counseling, move to understand the reason, let them feel that at least more than 40 people in our hospital emergency intensive care unit family have not given up on them.

There is also the problem of their three meals a day. At first, we can buy them for one or two meals, but what about this in the long run? We can't watch their brothers go hungry! Therefore, our big family spontaneously, those who go to work with meals will bring more meals, evenly for them to eat; order takeaway orders, will also pick up the lunch box and allocate a little to them to eat... Gradually, everyone got used to it, got used to thinking about these two special family members.

I remember once, Uncle Zhang gave the head nurse a phone number and said, "This is my friend's phone, help make a phone call and tell him to bring some fried fish and chicken legs to see me." The head nurse called the phone, only to find that it had long since become an empty number. The head nurse understood in his heart, so he used the lunch break to buy fried fish and chicken legs, handed it to Uncle Zhang, and before the head nurse could finish speaking, Uncle Zhang had already devoured it, and the head nurse left the ward with a smile of confidence. In the past few years, every New Year's Festival, the head nurse will buy some roast chicken roast duck, wrap some dumplings, etc. to improve their food, and the fruits eaten among colleagues will also be given to them. Usually, their daily necessities are all contracted by the head nurse. Under our careful care, this pair of difficult brothers is also getting better. We sincerely hope that they can return to their families as soon as possible and get rid of the disease.
