United are expected to sign players before the January transfer deadline

There is still more than a week to go before the January transfer window closes, but there is no indication yet that United will complete any major business.

United are expected to sign players before the January transfer deadline

Despite clubs keen to add a possession midfielder to their squad during this month's window, United have experienced an incredibly calm week so far, with no players added to the team and only three players being loaned out for the rest of the season.

While things could change quickly in the January transfer window – at the deadline, of course – United are not looking to add Ralph Rangnick's squad between now and 11pm next Monday.

However, with the final week of the window, the club is continuing to be connected with a large number of people.

Frank Casey

United are keen to make a new defensive midfielder a priority and have been linked regularly in recent months with AC Milan star Casey.

The Ivorian international's contract with San Siro expired at the end of the season, meaning there is a lot of speculation about his future at the moment.

Given the state of his contract, it is possible that United will try to sign him in a bargain before the window closes this month, or sign him for free in the summer.

Given United's desperate desire to strengthen the specific areas of the squad, Casey could be the ideal candidate on paper.

Dembele

If United aren't linked to the transfers of Barcelona and French winger Dembele, it's not a transfer window, isn't it?

The former Dortmund player has been linked to a move to Old Trafford for several years and despite bookmakers touting his possible move, the chances of that happening in this month's window are still slim.

The winger, like Casey, has a contract that expires this summer and refuses to sign a new contract at Camp Nou, so his club Barca are keen to sell.

Still, given the wide range of United's attacking options, he is unlikely to switch to United.

Antonio Rudiger

Another player whose contract is expiring, Chelsea centre-back Rudiger is another name closely linked to the move to Manchester United in recent weeks.

Since Thomas Tuchel took charge at Stamford Bridge a year ago, the defender's Chelsea career has been revived and he has been a key player in the Blues' backline.

However, despite confirming that his "family feels good" in London, he has yet to reach a new deal with the club, which increases Chelsea's chances of keeping him.

United may want to strengthen their centre-back option in the summer, and the prospect of signing Rudiger – if he doesn't sign a new contract at Chelsea – will appeal to a lot. However, in the last few days of this month's window, the action against him seemed slim.

Rice

West Ham's amulet Rice has been a specific target for United over the past 18 months or so and the club has discussed how they can construct a deal to secure a signing with him.

However, despite Rice's talent, United are not expected to move for him this month as the deal is more likely to materialize in the summer.

In addition, the England international is worth around £100 million, meaning United will face a huge challenge trying to lure him to Old Trafford.
