Google is reportedly developing a Project Iris for the AR device

Google is reportedly currently developing its own AR device, which resembles a pair of ski goggles and will be launched in 2024. The device will be able to incorporate virtual graphics in the real world and will be equipped with two outward cameras capable of projecting digital graphics in the wearer's real environment.

According to sources, the device, code-named Project Iris, will rely on Google's data centers to render content remotely and deliver it to the headset via a stable internet connection. This will allow the device to operate independently without the need for an external power supply such as a dedicated PC or smartphone.

It is reported that the device will be equipped with Google's customized processor, and the development method of Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro is somewhat similar. Some employees of pixel's hardware team were involved in the AR device project, but they were unclear whether the AR device would eventually be part of the Pixel brand.

The team on the project is about 300 people, and Google plans to hire hundreds more, led by Clay Bavor, who reports directly to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who is also currently in charge of Google's 3D video chat room Project Starline. The device is expected to launch in 2024 alongside the 3D video chat room Project Starline, which was developed last year.

It was followed by 2016's Google Daydream View, a mobile VR headset compatible with Pixel devices. If the report is true, Project Iris will be the company's first AR device since Google Glass.
